At the age of 22, he moved to the Illinois village of New Salem in 1831, and continued his self-education by borrowing books and teaching himself subjects such as grammar, history, mathematics, and law. He worked as a store clerk in two different general stores. He taught himself surveying, and worked part time at this vocation. He was also appointed postmaster, and served in the militia for 3 months during the Black Hawk war. Less than a year after moving to New Salem, he ran for the state legislature.

Walker Evans was born in St. Louis Missouri in 1903. He grew up in Chicago and New York City. He attended the Loomis Institute and Mercerburg Academy and then graduated from Phillips Academy in Massachusetts in 1922. In this essay I discuss Evans life and work and one of the main criticisms that was attributed to him. Walker Evans was born in St Louis in 1903 and raised in Kenilworth, a suburb of Chicago. Later the family moved to Toledo, Ohio while Walker was still young. He was educated at Andover and Williams College where he developed a love of contemporary literature. Among his favorites were Joyce and Eliot, Baudelaire and Flaubert.
