11-25-2012 The Invasiveness and in Depth Information of Reptiles in the United States of America Andy Abstract Reptiles originated around 320-310 million years ago during the Carboniferous period, having evolved from advanced reptile-like amphibians that became increasingly adapted to life on dry land. Invasive species are a large problem in the United States. Biological invasions can result in numerous harmful impacts on the environment and species. Nile monitor lizards (Varanus niloticus), Burmese Pythons (Python Molurus Bivittatus) and Brown Tree Snakes (Boiga Irregularis), have become established southern Florida. All of these animals are very large, with abilities to adapt to a new location and reproduce at an alarming rate, these
National Wildlife Federation) Another important feature of the pronghorn is that they have good eyesight which allows them to locate predators easily. All of these attributes are vital for their survival. The most suitable habitats for these herbivores are grasslands, open plains, and deserts. These animals are the fastest mammals in North America so, they must have a vast area in order to run. Pronghorns can survive in these habitats because they rarely drink water.
Richard Block lnsert Editor Since the Muriqui is the largest mammal entirely restricted to Brazil, and a single-species genus with no close relatives, it has become an appropriate symbol for the Brazilian conservation movement. In addition, World Wildlife Fund, the Brazilian Conservation Foundation and the Federal University of Minas Gerais have initiated a campaign
BASIC FACTS and CHARACTERISTICS: The taiga represents 29 percent of the world’s forest cover. It contains many animals includes 85 species of mammals, 130 species of fish, 32,000 species of insects, 300 species of birds and 300 species of fish! Another amazing fact about the taiga is that the coldest temperature in the Northern hemisphere has been recorded there, which is -65 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the taiga is covered by evergreens. The taiga, is prone to small wildfires because the trees have adapted to the climate and have thick bark which is protective against damaging wildfires.
Explain how physical factors influence the distribution of biodiversity shown (10 marks) There are several factors influencing biodiversity including; isolation, age, altitudinal range, productivity The most bio diverse areas are between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. The Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia have over 3000 plant species per 10000 km2 because they’re isolated as a series of islands which means there are more endemic species on the island as species develop in a more distinct way. The location within the tropics combined with the old age of the countries mean higher biodiversity as the species have more time to develop and evolve. Being within the tropics means there are fewer physical constraints such as light and water which are all in abundance due to rainforest conditions. The Himalayas have over 4000 plant species per 10000 km2 due to the large altitudinal range which means more climatic zones are involved creating more diverse habitats such as rock faces, steep hills.
It was set as a protected area in 1960 by Secretary of the Interior at the time, Fred A. Seaton. Eight million acres of this selected segment of the landscape is in the National Wilderness Preservation System, a construct that is intended to protect pristine and untouched land areas. The idea of this is to keep actual wilderness lands, not just protected forest, in the way they are naturally without human interference. The rest of the refuge has different management classifications, such as "Minimal Management, but all are highly protected from development and trespass. There is a huge contrast of animals living there, where it is quoted as having six completely different ecosystems spanning about 200 miles north to south.
Amazon Awareness The South American Amazon is a magnificent place with beautiful sceneries and great landscapes. It hosts many types of spectacular animals like the toucan and chimpanzee, and is home to more than 30 million people. The amazon is 1.4 billion acres of dense forests (Amazon). It also has millions of species along with 40,000 plant species, 3,000 fresh water species, and more than 370 types of reptiles (Amazon). The issue our group chose was the deforestation of the Amazon in South America.
Conservation Police Officers(formally known as Game Wardens) are the law enforcers of mother nature and her wild. The main duties of CPOs are to protect and maintain the state's natural resources as well as provide the public safety and services needed. Game Wardens spend most of their time on land, but also take the role in enforcing boating laws and investigation accidents. Unlike state, city, and county police officers CPOs are unique in using any form of transportation needed to get to a desired area. They have a wide range of transportation ranging from their feet to boats, jet skis and atvs.
Week 5 – Assignment 3: Argumentation – Persuasion Essay Richard Miller South University Online Pollution and the Chesapeake Bay The beautiful waters of the Maryland Chesapeake Bay have many valuable assets. For hundreds of years people have used this body of water for recreational, economic, and commercial gain. As seen firsthand, over the last 35 years the Maryland Chesapeake bay is in dire needs of pollution restrictions and clean-up primarily in the bay’s tributaries. Though many people may not realize, the Bay is the Nation’s largest enclosed body of water with multiple fresh water streams feeding it. It is also the nation’s most productive estuary ( Zynjuk, 1995).
However, deforestation effects everyone on a global scale. The loss of species, never to be seen again, is heartbreaking enough, but the loss of entire ecosystems might not effect anyone emotionally but it will affect them physically, with rising water levels, rising temperatures, and the greenhouse effect. By causing local wildlife to relocate into more urban environments, adversely impacting climate change, and negatively contributing to global atmospheric changes, deforestation should be a huge concern, especially for Americans who are typically more educated then the rest of the world. Americans have a responsibility to nature, and should use the education afforded to them by this country to spread awareness on deforestation. As Berlau states in Our Unhealthy Future, “It’s important to do what we can to protect the inhabitants of the environment or the planet...
