People cannot be millionaires overnight and know how to act when they receive large sums of money. Since most lottery winners tend to be people with average income, they seem to not understand how to manage their money well and that leads to reckless spending. In the Documentary “Reversal of Fortune,” a homeless man is given $100,000 and the man starts spending recklessly, wasting his money on two vehicles, beer and starts spending an average of $10,000 a week. That is an example of what reckless spending can do to a person with money as it changes a person for the worse. The second most common problem that faces the irresponsible winner is erratic behavior.
The major downside, however, is that one could lose it all in an instant. Consequently, as the addiction to continue chasing the jackpot grows, an insurmountable debt accumulates. Moreover, the urge to keep gambling becomes too great to abandon and eventually becomes financially problematic. Available evidence suggests that job loss and unemployment rates among gambling addicts are very high. This is because the gambling distractions cause decreased job productivity and multiple missed days at work.
The 18th amendment contributed to the rise of organized crime because it created a lot of underground business. From killings to people living in poverty, that’s what the prohibition caused. If people really thought that prohibiting alcohol to be sold leally were going to help the way that people lived during this time, they were wrong. A lot of people were against the law, they argued that if they banned alcohol legal businesses were going to go broke and that was not going to help the economy get better. But alcohol was not the only thing breaking families apart they said, after the war, soldiers would come home and find themselves in a whole, struggling to find jobs.
And most people won’t even know their identity’s been stolen until it’s too late and they become a victim to identity theft. Identity thieves can cause a lot of harm to their victims, such as stealing their personal information; several negative effects identity theft has on its victims are using your identity for criminal activities, financial loss, and it can even put people in physical danger. The most important effect identity theft causes is that criminals can use your identity to commit crimes. Such as drug smuggling or crossing state lines they can commit fraud to gain government benefits. And by using their identity to commit these crimes can seriously damage someone’s reputation.
Also, gambling can become a strong addiction that becomes a habit like smoking. When you become an excessive gambler, you are choosing to place their own money against someone else’s odds, if you happen to be a “lucky” person, you will win the all the money back for yourself. Most of the time, you’re not that lucky person, and in order to get that money back, you becoming willing to place more money on the line, hoping for you to at least break even. By doing so you can lose everything else you had to live for. According to Nicholas Ponte, who wrote an article in 2007 titled “Why gambling should stay illegal”.
Taylor Nordmeyer Prof. L Gertsma ENGL 1101 27 November 2012 Gang Control It’s no question that we have a major gang problem in the United States. More needs to be done to eliminate gangs, because they increase the drug flow, the crime rate, and intimidate citizens of their communities. Not all gangs are dangerous, but the ones that are, need to be contained because of their cruel behavior and their harsh crimes. Gangs become more powerful through these factors. Eliminating or controlling the drugs being distributed by gangs then their power will diminish.
Drug Trafficking in the United States from Mexico Drug trafficking in the United States and Mexico is a huge problem for the United States because it has a negative impact on other areas in society such as crime rates. The government needs to find a solution to better control drug trafficking because it claims lives and destroys families. Research shows Marijuana and Cocaine are the top two most illegally abused drugs in the United States. James Gray (2001) points out: Not only is this drug-money corruption problem of enormous concern in its own right, but additional lawless behavior often is derived from it as well. For example, the entire southern California area was shocked in September 1999 when a former officer of the Rampart Division
As crack cocaine use continues, the effects felt from the drug continue to get more severe. User’s who continuously abuse crack cocaine begin experiencing feelings such as cravings, obsessions and higher tolerances, symptoms that characterizes a serious addiction. Long-term crack cocaine effects seem much more severe than short-term Grimes 2 effects. Restlessness, mood change, irritability, auditory hallucinations, extreme paranoia, and addiction are lasting emotional and mental effects to the user. In addition, the feeling of worthlessness is another emotional long-term effect of crack cocaine use.
Gambling Gambling is an issue that gains lots of attention because of the controversy surrounding it. There are supporters for and again this multi-billion-dollar industry. Gambling seems like abnormal part of society for many, but others it is viewed as a destructive force ruining a person and their relationships. Since we live in a liberal society we should be able to spend or wealth and time however we want. However, there exist different types of gambling.
Such pervasive corruption denigrates and demoralizes all law enforcers and causes disrespect for law among citizens. The distractive effects of the drug war on law enforcement indirectly but profoundly encourage crime. In many cities, half or more of arrests are for drugs or related crimes, expending police resources and energy that might otherwise be available for domestic violence, fraud and other serious offenses. As a consequence, all criminals have a much better chance of escaping detection and punishment than if drugs were legal. (Duke, Steven B. Dec. 1993). The drug war also deeply undercuts the role of incarceration in dealing with people convicted of such serious crimes as child molesting, rape, kidnaping and homicide.
