His first move was to test the other European powers by inserting troops into Germany’s coal mining area next to France. This was ofcourse forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles and Hitler wanted to see how far he could push his adversaries before they would strike back. If Britain had not been so passive to Hitler they might have stopped this war before it ever started. They, however, allowed Hitler to do this because they did not want to start another war. Hitler then pushed the European powers further and further until he invaded Poland and Europe had no choice but to react. The results of the vote were fixed and showed that 99% of Austrian people wanted Anschluss (union with Germany).
The Berlin Wall During World War II, The success of West Berlin, “stuck like a bone in the soviet throat” as the soviet leader Nikita Khrushev put it. So the Russians knew that the allies in the west had to go, so they began their attempt to drive the United States, Great Britain, And France out of the western nation for good. In 1948, a Soviet blockade on West Berlin tried to starve them out of the City. But instead of complying and retreating from there, the strong allies supplied there stations from the air, which became known as the Berlin Airlift. The Berlin Airlift lasted more than a year and delivered more than 2.3 million tons of food, fuel, and other goods to West Berlin.
The Soviets cut off the western side of Berlin and prevented the Americans, British and French from accessing the city. It made the dispute between them public and was the first military confrontation of the USSR towards America. The western part of Germany had to supply West Berlin from the air for around a year, causing Russia to eventually give up. This was a triumph for the USA and the rest of Western Europe as they managed to outwit the Soviets, and due to their peaceful defeat the USSR looked increasingly aggressive. However this made Stalin and the Soviet Union despise the capitalist Europe even more.
They were able to do this because Berlin was surrounded by East Germany. This was to make western powers leave the city because it would be impossible to run their stable government in Berlin. The East had thought this plan was working and was making them completely independent from the rest of Germany. They felt that they could force West Germany to break off from them (Tiscali) West Germany was able to conquer this by the idea known as the Berlin Airlift. Many people in the West were struggling with basic needs like food and fuel.
announced intent to treat with East Berlin, regardless of any third party occupation rights in either sector of the city. A depressed and angry president then assumed his obligation was to prepare the country for nuclear war as the only option, and which he then personally thought had a one in five chance of occurring. In the weeks immediately after the Vienna summit, more than 20 thousand people fled from East Berlin to the western sector in reaction to statements from the U.S.S.R. Kennedy began intensive meetings on the Berlin issue, where Dean Acheson took the lead in recommending a military buildup with NATO allies as the appropriate response. In a July 1961 speech, Kennedy announced his decision to add $3.25 billion to the defense budget, along with over 200 thousand additional troops for the military, saying an attack on West Berlin would be taken as an attack on the U.S. The speech received an 85% approval rating.
Outraged by Western plans to create an independent West Germany, Soviet forces imposed a blockade cutting off rail, highway, and water traffic between West Germany and West Berlin. A day later, an airlift began flying in food and supplies for West Berlin's two million residents. The Blockade was clearly a failure and the US stuck to their policy of containment and no
So it all goes back to helping not hurting the people of Germany. The Soviets have had many attempts to take practical control over the entire city of Berlin, but this only helped the British and United States make clever plans like the Marshall Plan and the decision of the Airlift. The Berlin Blockade lasted from June 24th, 1948 to May 12, 1949, but still long enough to have killed many starving civilians. The Marshall plan in my opinion helped the most because $13 billion in economic and technical assistance were given to help the recovery of the European countries that had joined in the Organization for European Economic Co-operation. After all this happened in result to the Berlin Blockade, the Soviets started limiting their efforts to take control because they knew that other dominate forces like the United States and the Soviet Union and its
* -the russians called it "economic imperialism", the marshell plan the truman doctrine, just pumping money into any country that had any fear of a communist take over to stop the domino effect, they did this all over the world, but you can see it mainly in europe, although these friendly loans really set africa progress back quite alot and crippled many a country. * -The USA used stopping Soviet expansion as an excuse for what they did across the world. But as soon as the USSR fell, they continued to expand, even though there wasn't a USSR to "contain." The US military has around 700 military bases around the world. The USSR didn't even have 100 military bases.
Another reason to why America is to blame is after the success of the atomic bomb the members of the Grand Alliance began to see changes in Truman’s behaviour as he started to control the meetings they had and Stalin refused to be bossed around so arguments between Stalin and Truman started, they started. The USSR is to blame for the breakdown of the Grand Alliance for many reasons. One reason is that the USSR wanted to impose big respirations on Germany but America and Great Britain refused as they knew how it would affect Germany and could cause another war. A second reason is that Stalin wanted most of Europe to become communist, Roosevelt and Churchill didn’t agree. After Truman became Americas new President there was a lot of tension at the Potsdam Conference.
In response to the Berlin Blockade, the U.S. carried out a massive effort to supply the two million Berlin citizens with food, fuel and other goods by air force over 6 months. The airlift forced Soviets to end blockade in 1949. China then plunged into a full scale Civil War that was beyond control of the U.S government. Mao and Stalin signed a Sino-Soviet treaty of mutual assistance that placed China in the Russian orbit. The American response to the communist triumph states that the department refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new regime in Beijing and the U.S focused on Japan as its main Ally in Asia.
