Another explanation of poverty is the poverty cycle. The poverty cycle means that poverty is passed on through generations. In the poverty cycle, children who are born into poverty have a deprived childhood - they experience material and cultural deprivation, and as a result of this they are less likely to do well at school, gain qualifications and stay in education beyond the minimum school leaving age. This means that their future opportunities are limited because their lack of qualifications means that the jobs available to them are mostly unskilled and low-paid. Consequently, they are likely to live in poverty as adults.
WHY DOES POVERTY PERSIST IN CONTEMPORARY UK SOCIETY There are two different ways of defining poverty. The two different approaches have been favoured by many sociologists and researchers. The two different ones are; Absolute poverty and Relative Poverty (Giddens 2006). Absolute poverty is where people are lacking things for example; sufficient food shelter and clothing. These people are known to live in poverty.
The minimum wage that welfare reform was expecting people to live off of was in fact not enough to even support the buying of food. In Working poor, working hard Katherine Newman expounds on the fact that welfare benefits are cut off at low levels and unavailable to those that earn minimum wage and work a forty-hour week. Newman also states that only a “combination of the two income streams [welfare and a job] make it possible to manage…life.” (Newman) These two sources only emphasize the already established fact that welfare reform must be reformed
Material depravation is the lack of money and resources in the home. Sociologists who are ‘material depravation sociologists’ believe that the main cause of underachievement is lack of money and resources due to poverty. Overcrowding can lead to children not being able to study/ do homework, there may also be disturbed sleep, also, in a crowded household, children have a higher risk of accident. Families living in temporary housing will also be worse off as it means the child may have disrupted education. Howard (2001) noted that young people from poorer homes have lower intakes of energy, vitamins, and minerals.
Extreme poverty, according to Sachs, is defined as the inability to acquire the essentials for survival. This includes food, shelter and potable drinking water. Those who endure moderate poverty are just meeting the requirements for physical survival. Poverty in America assumes the character of “relative” poverty, in which those who earn below the national average income struggle to acquire quality housing, quality food and quality education (Sachs, 20). Though the immediate consequences of poverty in America may not be as severe as in other parts of the world, poverty in America still has a negative effect on millions and poses an extremely serious issue for legislators, administrators and other concerned Americans.

This is mainly seen in third word countries and rare in the UK. Relative poverty is where the individual has the basics but cannot afford things that would allow them to fully participate in society, i.e., people living on or below the minimum wage or in a low standard of living. This essay focuses on relative poverty and how it affects two groups of people likely to experience it – Lone or single parents and the unemployed A lone parent does not live with a spouse or partner, they have the day to day responsibilities in raising a child or children, the children reside with the lone parent for the majority of the time. Lone parents are a growing group and have one of the highest rates of poverty and receipt of social assistance. Single parents are widely now an accepted norm.
The second way poverty can be defined is as relative poverty which is the inability to afford the average standard of living for a particular society. A positive for this definition is that it takes social expectations into consideration, however a negative of this definition is that we cannot compare results between cultures as each culture has a different set of expectations. Many sociologists would say that poverty exists solely because of the way an individual chooses to live their life and the norms and values they choose to adopt that are different to the rest of societies. On the other hand there are some sociologists that blame the inequality within society. The functionalist theory of poverty by Davis and Moore can be applied to all aspects of society.
