With this respect comes a stronger conscience as well as greater morals. Diving deep into ideas on how to earn the idea of respect really emphasized the solution to the whole problem association with young adults and the increase in problems with them. Metaphors can be a great way to simplify a complicated subject to enable a wider variety of audiences to understand it more thoroughly, which essentially leads to greater enjoyment of the reading. A great example of using a metaphor to allow the reader to understand better is when the author states “It is an island apart, striving to maintain itself in a sea of change.” (pg 391). This is referring to how the household is not connected with the outer world and is therefore isolated from any interactions.
Commentary After reading Alice Walker’s novel ‘The Colour Purple’[1] I was heavily influenced by the theme of identity manipulation and oppression. Several other novels including ‘A Handmaid’s Tale’[2] and ‘Fingersmith’[3] helped further my understanding and thoughts around this theme, whilst also shaping my own attitudes and ideas on this subject. The oppression and manipulation of identity, a theme which neatly links the pieces together, was an appropriate foundation for my writing and was additionally developed by my wider reading. The non-fiction piece ‘Confessions of a People Watcher’ is a personal response to this theme; written in the form of a narrative essay it attracts a well-educated audience who have an interest in the personal opinion of such subjects. Although the primary purpose of this piece is to inform the reader, it was also created to inspire the reader’s own opinions around the themes.
He believes that at modern technology is detrimental to literature because “A childhood largely spent watching television yields to adolescence with a computer.” I agree that my generation does rely on computers and televisions but I disagree with his assessment of how great a threat this is to reading. Many people read extensively on the internet and e-books and the quantity of television is improving with literate shows on public broadcasting or cable shows. We also are exposed to Shakespeare and other great authors at school, that don’t necessarily need to read in our own time. In conclusion, Bloom is stating the only
To get the point of view on the subject in the article, the author has interviewed many different persons with the same opinion on the subject. The main opinion is accentuated with bigger letters in the middle of the front page, “In the past, it seems, everything was much simpler. We knew which class of society we belonged to and, if not, others would soon tell you.” That is also an eye catcher. The article is structured according to the logical rhetorical model, where the most interesting details comes first, then you get some more informations and in the end there is some kind of conclusion or message to the receiver. The claim in the article is that it is harder to divide the English people into social categories, as we always did in the past.
Also, another major focus of the book is on John Smith’s life after he returned to England. Historically, the book is extremely accurate and researched. However, two issues become apparent when reviewing this book. An issue that may be common for readers is that this book is difficult to read in short sittings. If the reader does not read the book regularly, it can be easy to forget important details.
He became a good collector of thoughts, but usually lacked his own opinion. Reading helped make him a more confident English speaker and writer. Education had changed his family’s life. He became resentful to his parents when they could not help him with homework which pushed him to read more. He became embarrassed at his parents lack of education,

Today I want to try my best to persuade you why you should read books. It is a disappointment that nowadays people read books less often due to the widespread of technology Books were v hundred years ago, but with the invention of radio, television, and the Internet and computer games, people careless for reading books. However, once you complete reading a great written book it will have a great effect on it will motivate you to become a better person and increases your knowlage a lot and provide you with great inspiration. Some people argue that television in the present days is much more informative and interacting I agree on that to some extent. Television, on one hand, offers a colourful motion picture, whereas, the books, on the other hand allows you to think imaginatively with the characters in the book and their background story and the atmosphere that the story takes place. There are also people wondering why they would read from books rather than from online websites? spending hours reading from internet can cause you headaches and pain in your eyes, on the other hand books dosent cause you headaches nor problem in your eyes no matter how long you read except if you are reading it from a wrong angle .
All authors write with an intended purpose; to entertain, persuade, inform, express etc. knowledge is gained from texts that inform us, theses text though can be valuable and enlightening, but can also be deceptive and untrustworthy. Through what we are reading the author has the ability to manipulate the information within the text to suit the preferred perspective. For this reason it is important that we develop a critical lens to challenge the multiple messages within those texts. This requires the readers to be able to analyse beneath the surface of the text rather than simply accepting and following the author's perspective.
Nicholas Carr and Clay Sharkey debate whether or not the internet is actually making us smarter or dumber. “Never has a communications system played so many roles in our lives- or exerted such broad influences over our thoughts, as the internet does today. “that is one of Carr’s viewpoints. Shirkey believes that “every increase in paperback book to you tube, alarms people accustomed to the restrictions of the old system, convincing them that the new media will make young people stupid. This fear dates back to at least the invention of movable type.” I tend to agree more with Sharkey because there are a lot of learning toold we can gain from the web.
