Lewis 1 Nicole Lewis English 103 Professor Davis 20 April 2015 Raising Minimum Wage In society, a vast majority of people are subjected to working minimum wage jobs, many of which have families to support. Minimum wage jobs were not intended for living off of, but that is no longer the case unfortunately. Some people believe that raising the minimum wage will raise prices, and then lower demand. Though this may appear true, raising the minimum wage in the long run will actually help businesses thrive, thus relieving income inequality, and helping the lives of struggling young adults and families living off of minimum wages. Contrary to popular belief, raising the minimum wage will help business flourish.
The technological advancements led to the emergence of factories and an exploding population surrounding them. Many advantages were gained during the Industrial Revolution, but it also had profound consequences on society. Two major social consequences included urbanization and child labor. During the Industrial Revolution there was an immense demand for cheap, unskilled labor. Families moved from rural areas to the newly industrialized cities to find work.
With only a month to prepare and the Court having struck down a similar law in New York to regulate hours, the court hearing began. Luckily, Brandeis had noticed the missing element from the Lochner v. New York case and had quickly compiled detailed evidence of how longer working hours effected women’s safety and health. Together, the data made up the “Brandeis brief” that soon became famous worldwide. It stated things such as “accidents to working women occur most frequently at the close of the day, or after a long period of uninterrupted work,” and “the evil effect of overwork before as well as after marriage upon childbirth is marked and disastrous.” These harsh conditions, he said, also drove women to drink and go to saloons, instead of being fit mothers and keeping up with the housework. Muller’s attorney, however, argued that Oregon’s law violated women’s rights.
Industrialization had a major impact on American society. It was a time of growth and expansion for the nation as a whole as it brought about new ideas and resistance to reformation. In many ways industry was helpful to America’s economy, but it was also a hindrance for the vast majority of the population. People like Sam Patch, otherwise known as the working poor, did not have much opportunity to advance in society, so as time passes there’s more resistance and protest to letting the rich get richer. The messages sent from the famous jumps of Sam Patch were the beginning of a new of democracy, and a fulfillment to the true meaning of the word equality.
Employees will see more money being deducted for Social Security Tax but other benefits will increase. According to Business Week, employees will begin to see smaller paychecks, “a worker making $50,000 in 2013 will take home $38.46 less per two-week paycheck or $1,000 per year”. Persons who are self-employed will be hit even harder. Their deductions will be 12.4% as compared to the 6.2 wage earners will have taken from their pay checks (employers also match 6.2%). There will be a permanent extension of the employer provided education assistance and this is important to employees.
Former women University of Michigan Law students were found to have taken an average of 3.3 months of leave plus 10.1 months of part-time work during their first 15 years. However, their male counterparts were virtually without either. This information hints towards women having more responsibility than men outside of the workplace that requires their time, pulling them away from work. More time endured in a profession leads to men being recognized for their efforts, thus resulting in promotion and increased salary. Time away from the office leads to a lack of promotional opportunities, causing women to run into the “glass ceiling” after being unable to advance within a profession – regardless of the quality of her work and
Some women “felt they were needed at home to raise families, crops for food and to fill the jobs that the men had vacated in order to serve their country.”(Suite101) Women’s lives on the home front during World War II were a significant part of the war effort for all participants and had a major impact on the outcome of the war. Once the men went off to war and left their jobs, the women that were single had a great advantage because job opportunities were everywhere. In the other hand married women had a tough time, especially if they had children. Hundreds of women worked in machine shops, welding shops, manufacturing plants, and also worked in war industries to make equipment for the war. New industries, naval, and army bases were being built during the home front.
The nations out put had risen 60% percent due to the aftermath of the civil war. Everyone had begun buying products because they wanted them it was not a necessity. Women began buying things such as make up and clothes while the Men bought cars. By the end of the decades more than 30 million cars were on the road. Things like this also led to the developments in aviation, where they created pressurized
Since I have no previous work experience I will basically be pulled out of the running for the job, because they would rather hirer a person that is over qualified if they are paying you $13 to work for them. Also, the increase in minimum wage affects my community, because right across the street from Norridge is Chicago. In Chicago there are a lot of small business (230,642 to be exact) and those small business may already have trouble getting by. Small businesses support nearly half of Chicago's workforce, and they are major drivers of community and economic growth in the city. So by making them pay their workers more may just make them close down.
Since coal mining is the main income for many families in that region. When layoffs occurred it forced women to find jobs. The ones without an education were limited to a few amounts of jobs. Some of the students that Katherine interviewed have great financial success due to their education. It opened up many opportunities for them for higher paying jobs.
