A lack of knowledge, both civic and wide-ranging, is the most significant deficit in most American students’ education. For the most part our students and teachers are bright, committed, well-meaning and good-natured. Many students and teachers are working harder in school that their counterparts did a decade ago. Yet most students still lack basic information that high school and college teachers once took for granted. This lack of knowledge is even more important than most people realize.
Everything academic revolves around the year-end state testing to the point that other subjects are usually neglected. Reading, math and writing are the main thrusts of schools, and are obviously important. However, critics state that children are not receiving well-rounded educations because of the emphasis on these subjects
Aristotle has a monist approach to the soul, unlike Plato he says that the soul cannot exist without the body. The soul is not a body but something that belongs in a body, comparable to the brain; it is necessary and is within all humans and it gives us reason, intellect and an innate sense of justice. This therefore can make his theory more convincing than Plato’s as the soul isn’t ‘immortal’ and dies along with the body, thereby eliminating the theory of reincarnation which is hard for anyone who isn’t Hindu to believe as it is contradictory to their religious views. Aristotle states that all reason is associated with the pure thought of the Prime Mover and the soul is what gives the body its shape and form; he argued that the soul is not a substance but the reason and shape behind the matter. Best described by using the example of a marble statue, as the marble stature is essentially a block of marble but it has a shape and form and like the body the soul, the shape and form cannot be removed from what the statue is, in the same way the body cannot be separated from the soul.
In September writing was my biggest problem but now it has gotten much easier to punctuate and organize all my writing pieces. But on another note I feel as if I should have put more effort toward all my work I did, I never hit those A+ grades everyone said I should have gotten so next year I will do everything in my power to prove them right because I know I can do better I just need another chance next year. All the strategies I was taught will stay with me forever I will use them through high school and even collage because they helped me and others
Ananke creates moira and by accepting moira people have arête. Necessity creates one’s fate and by accepting that fate then people can reach heroic excellence. An example of moira was, for Zeus, accepting that his son must die; and that he cannot intervene because by necessity he needed to act as a god first, a father second. During the time when the Greek city-state was emerging, there was a change of focus. The Oresteia was introduced and there began tragic drama.
A thesis could be made: Men’s brave deeds which should be honored related to their noble virtues and the spirit of courage to fight for their country instead of their fame. Since the Pericles’ Funeral Oration took the history of the Peloponnesian War as its background, the purpose of the speech should be encouraging citizens to focus on the greatness of Athens and benefit the state with their brave deeds both in peace and in war. A democracy was taken by the government that made the administration be controlled in citizens. There was no exclusiveness. The
Britain’s Blitzkrieg: Winston Churchill’s War to End All Wars Widely regarded as one of the most motivational speeches ever given, “Their Finest Hour” by Winston Churchill effectively captured the attention of most of 1940’s era Great Britain. During this bleak time period, under heavy political fire, Churchill’s speech was intended to motivate British people to aid with war support, but ended up doing much more. Due to its historical context, stylistic methods, and the effects the speech, it can be concluded that this speech is one of the most effective ever written. One of this speech’s main contributors of success was when it was given. “Their Finest Hour” was orated on June 18th, 1940, directly following the Battle of Britain.
This report contributed to the growing and still present idea that American schools are failing. During
He placed importance on advancing philosophical thought and self-examination, which differed from the active political involvement and unity that Greeks strongly identified with. He undermined the importance of owning land and gaining social prominence, which were integral components that came with the privilege of being a citizen. This threatened many who relied upon material wealth and societal exclusivity as a source of their identity. Socrates strove to spread the power of knowledge to everyone by showing every person he met how to be an active thinker. While his contemporaries consented to his death, Socrates planted seeds of knowledge in his followers who were able to spread his powerful message for generations to
America has broken many chains and barriers thought of as impossible to break. One of President Barack Obama’s most inspiring speeches “The Perfect Union” touched the hearts of many Americans. I believe that this is the best campaign speech ever given in the United States because of the arguments he presents throughout the speech. President Obama urges,“ we need unity; racially charged at the time we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems”(363-364) . He emphasizes the damage that racial division is causing to our society.
