The project was headed by Major Leslie R. It became known as “The Manhattan Project”. It was kept top secret against almost everyone and the military soldiers. After six months of bombing the Japanese we dropped the bomb Know as “Little Boy” and was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. We then doped another bomb Called “Fat Man”, and was dropped over Nagasaki. I do agree of dropping the bomb because it did save a lot of lives.
At the time, revenge, geopolitics and an expensive project that could not be allowed to simply rust away, meant the atomic bomb had to be hastily deployed “in the field” in order to see its power and aftermath – though little was known about radiation and its effects on humans. Devastation, destruction, terror, and straight up fear, is what people would’ve seen if they visited Nagasaki or Hiroshima after the atomic bomb was dropped on those cities. The number of scientists who were involved in the development of the atomic bomb is unbelievable. The bombs were very unique objects, whether it was the size of the bomb, or even the amount of explosives inside. August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945 were days in history like no other. Only one country in history has ever used an atomic bomb against another nation; the United States of America. Code named the Manhattan Project, the atomic bombs were being developed to use against Japan towards the end of World War II. The United States was completely justified in dropping the bombs on Japan. Japan was near defeat, but many question how close Japan was to surrender (Jennings).
But Japan refused to surrender after the first atomic bomb. Another atomic bomb was dropped, but in Nagasaki. It was called ‘Fat Man’ and was dropped on the 9th of August. The decision to drop the bomb was decided by Harry Truman the president of the USA at the time. This atomic bomb was designed by the world’s finest scientists at the time and had 50 times the explosive power of a normal bomb.
The ones who believe this, do not comprehend the many different factors in war and how the route that was chosen was best for both parties that were directly affiliated with the bombings. The cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have been fire bombed if the atomic bombs were not dropped, causing similar damage and death counts to the atomic bombs. According to Kyoko Iriye Selden, "The most influential text is Truman's 1955 Memoirs, which states that the atomic bomb probably saved half a million US lives— anticipated casualties in an Allied invasion of Japan planned for November. Stimson subsequently talked of saving one million US casualties, and Churchill of saving one million American and half that number of British lives"(1). With this amount of casualties projected, a land invasion would have trumped the death toll of D-Day.
Our country needs to place more emphasis on education and technology and quit spending so much money on defense. Our government, in my opinion, is very wasteful and needs to learn to control their money better. Every time one of their ‘friends’ needs a bailout they run to the ATM. But that’s okay because they’ll just cut the education budget to make up for it. America will soon be over if the United States doesn’t get their priorities in order.
