What is the difference between local, county, state, and federal law enforcement? What do we have them and how is their authority differing? Local officials will enforce all levels of law. The most common law enforcement officials that we see are municipal police officers that deal with cities and townships. The main difference between these officers and those at the state or federal level is they are the initial enforcement front for all criminal laws.
The job of a police officer is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crime. They are engaged in a dangerous and stressful occupation that can involve violent situations that must be controlled. In many of these confrontations with the public it may become necessary for the police to administer force to take control of a situation. In Kenya the situation has been like this before a new constitution came into place: • The President is the Commander in Chief of all Armed Forces including Prisons Department • He appoints ministers of Defense and Internal Security together with their assistants and Permanent Secretaries. They all have their offices in the Office of the President • He appoints all army Generals and Commandants, the Police Commissioner, the Admin Police and General Service Unit Commandants • He appoints all the eight Provincial Commissioners and 250 District
Roles of Law Enforcement There are many police agencies across America who play a vital role in our legal process. These agencies provide the foundation for the prosecution and punishment of people who violate the law. The vastness of the United Stated provides many different demographics that require unique methods used by law enforcement in maintaining order within a specific community. Police organizations have a very important role in law enforcement. Police are tasked with seeking out and locating individuals within a community who have committed a crime.
It is important to note that in one fundamental respect, all law enforcement agencies in the United States are subject to control and direction by citizens through their elected representatives. This represents the very essence of policing in a democratic society. Mayors, governors, and presidents appoint law enforcement chief executives and have a large say in directing law enforcement agencies under their control through the appointment of agency chief executives and the setting of basic policy. City councils, county boards, state legislatures, and Congress exercise control through the budgetary process (Walker 2005). The civilian oversight of law enforcement movement in the United States is expanding and evolving.
Private Security Laws Ever since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 the need for private security has been increasing. New private security companies have been entering the field try to meet those growing needs. Whether it is an established company or a new company breaking into the security field, both must abide by the laws and regulations of the state they conduct business in. Not all states have laws and regulations that regulate the security industry, but many do. In these states, private security companies abide by the laws and regulations to ensure professionalism and increased standards by security personnel.
The anti-terrorist laws have emerged with new vigour in the 21st century. These new laws have brought with it significant changes within the society as well as a wide array of controversy concerning the issue of due process. The Canadian anti-terrorist legislation was immediately established after the 9-11 events. These laws however were created within a quick period of time giving the makers of the law limited time to be able to put enough thought and considerations (Mooney, 2005). These laws were simply created to target ‘terrorist’ and terrorist groups, to help the Canadian government meet the challenges posed by ‘terrorism’ (Mooney, 2005).
City police officers are responsible for maintaining order, responding to emergency calls, and dealing with violence, and serious crime. Grant and Terry (2008), suggest that local agencies also take part in processing fingerprints, preventing and deterring crime, investigating violent crimes and property crimes and enforcing traffic laws. County Sheriffs have unique roles because they serve law enforcement (patrolling and investigating crimes), courts (Serving subpoenas and providing security for the courts), and corrections in that they maintain the county jails. The coroner or medical examiner’s roles vary as well because they investigate crime scenes; they conduct autopsies, and determine the
Immediately after the 9/11 terrorists attacks, there was an overwhelming need to review and change the security procedures that were in place at that time. Since then, there have been several major security measures introduced and implemented across the country. What is clearly evident is that the USFG DOES NOT need to substantially reduce security measures in all U.S. airports. In fact, the USFG should increase its role in security measures. Some security experts and the media have scrutinized and even lambasted current security measures in U.S. airports.
Law enforcements key purpose is to keep order and deter criminal activity in this country. In history the system of American police was something learned from Great Britain and adapted by America. In the past the first ideals of policing were controlled by the able-bodied men and young boys who were part of the first Europeans to venture to our lands. This was mainly a defensive motion as it was used to defend themselves from the natives to the lands that did not wish to share their home (Schmallager, 2009). As time went on and the natives became more settled and peace was more successful, policing became one of the primary duties of the Justices of the Peace.
In the crime control model, all parties involved are afforded, in any stage of crime control, a lengthy list of rights. The police officers must read any suspect the Miranda warning so the suspect in informed of their rights. While in the due process the judges, before a plea, makes certain that the defendant understands exactly what he/she is pleading to and what those consequences could be to their plea. The outcome to the criminal justice system is trying to accomplish, with the crime control
