Word Count: 1910 Why is the initial consultation so important? What factors will an ethical therapist cover at this time? In this essay I plan to discuss why it is so important to have an initial consultation, before taking on a client in full hypnotherapy. I will also look at what important ethical factors a therapist should be looking out for, and why these factors can affect a client’s therapy. Initial Consultation A responsible therapist before undertaking work with a client should endeavour to learn about the prospective client to ensure that hypnotherapy is the right course of action, and beneficial. Some therapist will offer the initial consultation free. This is entirely up to the therapist. There are a number of aims of the initial consultation which are to gather as much information as possible about the prospective clients and the reason they have decided to undertake hypnotherapy. It is important to get down to the real reason why they have come. This will influence the hypnotic suggestion during the therapy. “A suggestion is a communication by the hypnotist to the subject and, as with any communication, it is intended to alter the recipient’s feelings, thoughts and behaviour in a specified way.” Pg 3, Heap & Dryden, 1991. For example if the prospective client wants to quit smoking, the reasons behind that idea will indicated if the client can be successful but also these reasons will be put into the hypnotic suggestion. The client who wishes to quit smoking could reason that smoking is unhealthy for them and their loved ones. The therapist should then dig deeper and ask when they smoke more. It could be that smoking is their only successful way of dealing with stress. As well as discovering the reason why the prospective client has thought about hypnotherapy, the therapist is also finding out if their skills are
