Manifest Destiny/Louisiana Purchase The purchasing of Louisiana had a startling blow to all residents in America. And what America was just became what America will be. One main reason for purchasing Louisiana was so America would be double its original size making it the third largest continent. Second, it would give the western farmers the unquestioned right to ship their produce down the Mississippi river. In a matter of days Monroe and Livingston proceeded with the deal without consulting with the government power. Due to that slip Jefferson believed it a strict interpretation of the constitution. One, is because the sale violated the 1800 Third Treaty of San Ildefonso in several different ways. Second, is because the government said nothing about buying new territory. Doubts were cascading that the purchase was even constitutional, or even the right decision to be making. Jefferson, who originally set out to simplify and decentralize the government, had instead expanded the central power throughout the new territory. In 1803 with the purchase of the Louisiana territory from France, the United States had embarked on an aggressive policy of the expansion. But this policy had many negative effects as well as positive ones. One of these positive benefits was that America is now a world power. But with such power came great responsibility. Within 50 years of the Louisiana Purchase had been in a war with Great Britain over the northern border, a war with Mexico over its southern and western boarders and many battles with Native American groups in the west.
