Why Is IT Cultures So Important in Organizations Today? Everest University Online Abstract “Culture is considered the glue that holds an organization together and for others, the compass that provides direction (Tharp).” Based on research, IT culture is prevalent in the success of any organization by implementing and “promoting a healthy relationship and a more desirable work environment; which should lead to a greater organizational success (Nord, Nord, Cormack, & Cater-Steel).” Why Is IT Cultures So Important in Organizations Today? What is the big deal with information technology, yet alone, the importance of IT cultures in today’s organizations? Let’s begin with a simple definition of information technology, which is defined by Dr. Stephen Haag and Dr. Maeve Cummings, “as any computer-based tool that people use to work with information and support the information and information-processing needs of an organization (Haag & Cummings, p. 520).” IT (information technology) culture, also defined by Dr. Haag and Dr. Cummings, refers to “how the IT function is placed structurally within an organization and the organization’s philosophical approach to the development, deployment, and use of information technology (Haag & Cummings, pp. 48-49).” Organizations are built on ideas, values, and beliefs and to be successful for today and tomorrow, an organization must implement IT cultures into its foundation. According to the Dr. Haag and Dr. Cummings, “IT culture has two primary aspects: the structuring of the IT function and the organization’s philosophy as to the use of IT (Haag & Cummings, p. 49).” With technology ever-changing, organizations must find ways to not only gain or maintain a competitive advantage over its competitors, but more importantly, it (an organization) must choose an approach for placing the function within.
