Why is Intelligence difficult to define and measure What is intelligence? Can it be described as a single entity or is it multifaceted? Many definitions of intelligence have been produced and thus far psychologists have been unable to agree on a definitive definition, hence it is this impossibility to attribute it to a standardised exact definition that is the principal difficulty in the ability to measure it. There is a general consensus that intelligence compromises of an ability to adapt to one’s environment and the capacity to learn from experience, however tests are unable to measure these components very well. This essay will discuss the various theories along with critiques of each, and their contribution to our understanding & measuring of intelligence today. It will conclude by suggesting that perhaps the further development of neuro-scientific study and the integration into the cognitive of possible motivational and social factors may provide better understanding of what intelligence may be and a clearer idea of how the various or single intelligence(s) work. Definition of intelligence is often sought in the Psychometric approach through the results of IQ test scores, by isolating cognitive components such as, elements of the reasoning process (Dreary 2001) The timings of these tests are said to be predictive of the ability to think accurately at speed – the brightest having the ability to perform better and finish the test .It has been shown that mental tests often predict school or job performance. However a high performance does not necessarily lead to a better performance at work. Possibly it may be a result that people that perform well in these tests get more encouragement or are more motivated as a result.
