Part 1-Introduction 1.1 Purpose of report The aim of this report is to convince the Executive Board to adopt a more holistic approach to the management of information. This report is targeted at medium-sized organisation, persuading the Board of directors using information management skills rather than computer-based solutions to solve information-related problems. ‘‘It is a popular misconception that information management is only concerned with information technology management.’’(Hinton, 2006:3). Considering examples such as planning, interpreting and conveying information as well as making decisions, an embedded computer based system could not capture them effectively. Many of the day-to-day information require interaction between people. It is not uncommon businessmen having face-to-face meetings with their clients, or communicates through phone calls. Instead of focusing on computerised solutions to solve information related problems, it is essential to characterise IM in a more comprehensive view, which ‘‘emphasizes an organization’s entire information environment.’ (Davenport, 1997: 4) and how human solve problems. The concept of information and related terms will be further discussed to derive the importance of information management within a firm. 1.2 Information concept ‘‘From the point of view of the user, information is what we seek and pay attention to in our outside world when we need to add to or enrich our knowledge in order to act upon it.’’ (Orna 2004:7) Information is what human beings transform their knowledge into when they want to communicate it to other people.
