Book banning has a huge negative effect on how students live, at school as well as at home. Book censors can only give unreasonable and unjustifiable motives for banning novels to validate their cause. In the end, the actions of the people who ban books create numerous negative effects on minors. Book banning limits student access to great works of literature. Many people regard William Shakespeare as one of the greatest English writers of all time, yet almost all of his plays have been prohibited from most schools.
The overthrow of reading materials is defeat of creative thought. Books and periodicals are not the only ones being suppressed by pressures to the political and social systems. They are also being brought against the educational system, films, radio, television, and against the graphic and theatre arts. However or whenever these attacks occur, they usually fall at least one of the following categories: religion, war & peace (violence), sociology & race, language, drugs, sex, inappropriate adolescent behavior The word censorship probably would not exist today if all citizens agreed upon all things. This however is not possible for we are all unique individuals and have our own likes and dislikes.
The word “Nigger,” used for a member of any dark-skinned race of people and is often known for being offensive, is used over two hundred times in Huckleberry Finn. The word fuels and contributes to black people’s feelings of low self-esteem and to white people’s disrespect for them. In the classroom, while reading Huckleberry Finn, students do not want their differences highlighted to their fellow classmates. Huckleberry Finn accentuates their one difference that is always apparent, which is the color of their skin. People against the use of Huckleberry Finn in the schools believe black children are offended by the use of the word “nigger’ anywhere, no matter what the teacher uses to justify it.
Seriously the unnecessary use of those words to an extensive amount, I could almost guarantee you that there was a swear word on every page. Another point is the sexual content in this book I find is extremely inappropriate for our age group. I may not of had to read it out loud but I was defiantly not fair to the students uncomfortable with it, I can n barley see people kiss without feeling like I’m invading their privacy. So all in all I did not appreciate those scenes and would recommend not be in our reading criteria. This book is actually banned from some schools in the United States.
Yet for as long as we can remember, there have been attempts to silence those willing to express their mind in any fashion. Of all the sources of controversy, books would have to be the most long-running and controversial topic throughout history, and even in this day and age. Books such as Of Mice and Men, The Catcher in the Rye, and Go Ask Alice are just some of the books on the long list of books that have been banned or are banned in schools across America. Tattoos are not prohibited in any type of employment because that could be considered as racism act against a person and that would defiantly be a big situation which could affect any agency. Tattoos are very nice if a person like them and many people do like them but not on them. People must understand that we live in a country where we are constantly being judged for our actions. Many say tattoos are against the Bible and that Jesus Crist will punish whoever puts tattoos in their body, although other say that tattoos are gang affiliated.
Slavery was a topic and an issue between the North and South for many years. Many people in the North felt that slavery was immoral. People in the South felt that slavery was not only right but it was necessary. Slaves were treated very inferior. They often lived in small cabins regardless of how many there were.
In order for this book to be historically correct and accurate, the word nigger must be used. Finn addresses his slave, Jim, as nigger; however, throughout the course of this novel, Finn sees the error in his ways and in turn helps Jim gain his freedom. Whether or not The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be banned from schools is a debatable topic. The claims as to why this American classic should be banned are logical; however, they fail to put things into perspective. This word as well as many other vulgar words are said and heard daily.
A banning is the removal of those materials.” (American Library Association). When the book is banned, it has been effectively removed from a school or library and is no longer available for use. Even though those who challenge and ban the book have the best intentions, they are not only hindering the learning process, but are also keeping children and young adults from creating their own opinions. There are many reasons why a book has either been banned or challenged. The top three reasons seem to be that the book is either sexually explicit, had offensive language, or unsuited to any age group.
The Kite Runner The kite runner is a banned book because of its vulgar language, sexual content and religion views. Parents have struggled to accept this book in their children's school curriculum. Many readers believe that it's a really good book if you are trying to learn about other countries and their culture. This book is about jealousy, friendship and guilt. It's on the top ten list of the most challenged books according to American library association in 2008.
