The most frequent argument offered by the NRA about the failure of gun control is the skyrocketing crime rate in exactly those places that have the most strict gun control, New York City and Washington, D.C., to name but two. How can you believe what the NRA says about gun control when it has such a vested interest in gun sales? Gun manufacturers purchase almost 100 percent of the advertising in the NRA publications the American Hunter and American Riflemen. This advertising revenue is a considerable source of income for the NRA. Gun manufacturers never become involved in defending gun rights, they let the NRA do it for them. The NRA and gun manufacturers have a very clear vested interest in gun sales, and the public is asked to believe that ever escalating sales of handguns and assault rifles do not in any way compromise public safety. Despite the NRA's campaign against gun control, we stand on the threshold of legislation that, when finally passed, cannot be circumvented by going to the next city, county or state. It's called the Brady Bill. It will provide for a sev-en-day nationwide waiting period and background check before taking delivery of a handgun at retail anywhere in the United States. It was passed over in the 101st Congress, thanks to Speaker of the House Tom Foley, and it might not make it through the 102nd Congress. However, Handgun Control Inc. Only time will tell. It's interesting to note that all of the above gun control laws were bitterly opposed by the NRA. If these four states' waiting period and background check laws can stop a few thousands prohibited purchasers of handguns, how many more can be stopped with the Brady Bill nationwide? The yearly estimates run from 50 to 100,000 a year. Yes, gun control will work if given a chance.
