In what sense can we say that Ellen Sirot is a logical/inevitable/natural offspring of our society ?Why can we say that we, as individuals, not just society, created such a phenomenon ? At first glance, Ellen Sirot can appear as a « weirdo », a person very different from us. Let’s take a look at her and comment what we see. We see somebody who is a female, who is a respected hand-model, but whose involvement with her work gets a little out of hand (no pun intended). Like narcissus, she goes somewhat overboard (no pun intended again). Whereas we can easily dismiss her as crazy and scoff at her infatuation with herself, let’s see if such a « phenomenon » really comes as a surprise. Could it be that someone or something wants her to be this way ? That anyone or anything benefits from her being that way ? She sure wasn’t « born that way ». In our society, females have to look good. They get punished if they don’t, and rewarded if they do. Anyone needing proof of this, just take a look at women’s magazine covers at the newspaperstand. So Ellen Sirot treasures her appearance, even if just a part of her body ; after all, hands are a very visible part of a person. She is no different than a « sexy » movie star or a pop singer—and a million other women apparently in love with their hot looks. Moreover, she works in the field of advertisement. In today’s world, advertisement is everywhere, it is the herald of consumer society. Nobody questions the legitimacy and the place of advertisement. Advertisement tycoons like Jacques Séguéla are revered as semi-gods by an impressive quantity of respectable people. Major advertisment agencies are established in some of the fanciest neighborhoods in the world, like the Champs Elysées or Times Square in New York.
