American Identity is having every right and every freedom that every American should have. Being able to speak out and be heard freely is real important in our American Identity. Believing in what we want and making our own decisions play a huge role in or American Identity. It is also very important today that every American, no matter what race, has an equal opportunity to live as an American and nothing less. An African American man, by the name of Crispus Attucks, expressed this through his actions at the Boston Massacre. Attucks was an African American slave, who wanted nothing but his own American Identity. He wanted to be free. He tried many times to buy his freedom from his owner, William Brown, but Brown never would allow it.…show more content…
On March 5, 1770, he led, without fear, the Boston Massacre, where he became known as the first to fight and die in the fight for his and others’ freedom. This event became known as the backbone of the American Revolution. It paved the way for American independency. This played an important role in establishing our true American Identity as we Americans understand it today. Attucks became known as one of the most important figures in African-American history. This is not just for what he did for his race but for all people that call themselves Americans. He is a reminder that the African-American heritage is not only African but American. It is a heritage that begins with the beginning of America. He has been described many times as ‘the first to defy, and the first to die’. In 1888, there was a monument set up, the Crispus Attucks monument, on Boston Common to commemorate him and his efforts. In 1996, the Black Patriots Coin Law was set in his name. Following that, the Black Revolutionary War Patriots Silver Dollar coin was made in honor of him and all that he did to establish American Identity. In conclusion, I still believe that American Identity is having every right and every freedom that every American should have, no matter their race. Crispus Attucks shows a perfect example of this. He took action for what he believed in. He fought and died for his independency. He showed not just African Americans but all Americans to stand up for what we believe in, to keep strong the true American Identity, and to fight for the freedom, justice, and equality that this great nation has to
