The DIS program fits perfectly with my academic interest because I believe that by choosing to study abroad in Denmark, I can further my studies in positive psychology and global cultures. First, positive psychology is a field that has relatively short history but is a study that is growing fast. And coincidentally, Denmark is ranked as one of the most happiest countries in the world, and I always wondered why this was the case and how this Danish happiness could become more prevalent. First and foremost, adapting oneself into a new environment is a challenge. There may be cultural moments that turn out to be very different from expectations and classroom knowledge. And in the past summer, I attended Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Living in China was a challenge because I faced a language barrier that I did not experience in the past. There were incidents when I could not perfectly convey a message and was surprised by an unexpected action; even just being labeled as a “foreigner” created a handicap in situations. But, I was not disappointed or scared; rather, I found others ways to communicate and connect with the foreign land and its people. Chatting to a cab driver on my way to the inner city, talking to strangers to prepare for my class presentation, riding a bike to class along with other Chinese students, hanging out with my language tutor at a local cafe, visiting Chinese students’ dorms, all summed up to an invaluable experience that helped me fully understand what country ‘China’ was, and how to live a ‘Chinese’
