Why I Want to Be a Doctor

Heroes are considered to be the policemen and firemen, people saving lives daily by fighting criminals and fires. But in today’s world, if one is not fighting against something that can be seen by the naked human eye, he will not be recognized as a hero. Personally, doctors are heroes. Physicians also save lives daily by combating against viruses and bacteria. Without them, millions of humans would die every day. That is why I would like to pursue a career as a pediatrician. But it might be a little difficult without perfect vision. Passion and medicine have always been two interchangeable words for me. The sensations one feels after curing another human and possibly saving their life is what I hope to achieve in life. Ever since I was a toddler, I would play doctor with my sister and cousin using a stethoscope. As I grew older, my fascination with medicine increased. During the summer of junior year, I volunteered at Hospital at the Fitness Center and the Flower Shop. Even though I was not directly involved with the patients, I was given the chance to meet with the patients’ loved ones and really grasp the importance of well-educated and caring physicians. I really enjoyed my time at the hospital and volunteered again during the summer of 2012. This time I was placed at the Art Cart and given the chance to interact with the patients. The Art Cart was filled with art supplies that the volunteers took around to the cancer, post-surgery, and heart patients to engage with the patients by making arts and crafts. The patients I met and the memories I created while volunteering made a lasting impression on me. Some of these patients were hanging on by a thread hoping that it would be their last night in the hospital and the next morning they would be home surrounded by their family and friends.
