MOHD AFIF SYAZWAN BIN ALIAS 920706-02-5093 Why I Want To Be a Doctor Recalling my mind back at earlier times when I was still young, I could still remember that I was terribly afraid of blood. Not to mention, but whenever I got to see blood, most of the times I would faint. I was always questioning myself why such a thing could happen. That kind of weird behavior has been a starting point that trigger me to understand myself better, my own body and more importantly, to get rid of fears towards blood or ‘Hemophobia’ in scientific term. Therefore, I decided to choose Medicine as a course for pursuing my study because of the inquiry feeling to know more about complexity of human body. Entering International Baccalaureate Programme has brought a significant change in my life. I was given the opportunity to explore my talents and build qualities required for a doctor. In order to gain deeper understanding and exposure towards the carrier as a Medical Doctor, I have spent my semester holidays by visiting Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim (HSAH), Sungai Petani, Kedah; a local hospital located near my hometown. There, I have developed my skills of communication and confident as I was given trust by the staffs to get closer to the patients from various ages. For three days, I was exposed to three different wards in the hospital which are Orthopedic, Pediatric and Surgery. It was a very meaningful and valuable experience as I learnt to control my fear towards blood. Seeing various conditions of patients there that always relying on doctors has thought me one more important thing. Being a Medical Doctor is not just to fight my own fears, but to treat the patient’s sickness, hence, motivate them to continue their lives. I feel very grateful for those great experiences. Recently, I have participated in Acheh Humanitarian Project at Lhokseumaweh, Acheh, Indonesia
