Why I deserve a scholarship I have overcome numerous obstacles to become the person that I am today. As a young child, I was diagnosed with an Oral Language Disorder, Disorder of Written Expression, Mathematics Disorder and an attention problem. Prior to living with my grandparents (1st grade) and then adopted by them (3rd grade), I lived with my biological mother and stepfather. My home environment was neglectful in terms of emotional development, appropriate stimulation, and nutrition. During that time I was also traumatized by exposure to severe storms. According to Scottish Rite Hospital psychologists, the early neglect appeared to have impacted my ability to perform certain developmental functions typically encouraged and taught by parents. Because of my positive attitude, determination and the support and love of my parents, I have overcome these obstacles and I am successful in school with a 92+% average, rank in the top 20% of my class and will graduate on the distinguished plan with 15 college hours. I am involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Yearbook, Spanish Club, Drama Club, Math and Science Club and I play Varsity Tennis. In the late fall of 2009, my mom was put on dialysis treatment three (3) times a week. I drove her to Terrell when I was not in school and waited with her for the 4-4 ½ hours while she underwent the dialysis treatments. In January and February of 2010, my mom was in ********Medical Center—***** for 56 days because of major heart surgery. My dad needed to stay with her and I was “home alone” at the age of 16. I learned to be self sufficient: laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, getting myself up in the morning and off to school, keeping my grades up, taking care of the animals, keeping the house clean, and all the other responsibilities required when living “on your own”.
