Why Drink Water

Water: The Neglected Necessity Everyone knows that water is a key element to everyday life. Right behind oxygen, water is the second most essential element to our survival. However, more often than not, it is abandoned regularly for a delicious soda or a caffeine-loaded coffee. These beverages, while delicious to the taste, can be detrimental to the body when substituted for a glass of water. Don’t get me wrong, I love a nice Mountain Dew or an iced Frappuccino every now and then, but I make sure to drink extra water to counterbalance it. The problem at hand isn’t necessarily the drinks themselves. I am a firm believer in the saying, “everything is good in moderation.” However, statistically speaking at least, most Americans have fallen into the trend of replacing water with a soda, coffee, or other unhealthy beverage (Cook). These types of beverages should be consumed in addition to one’s daily intake of water, and they probably should even require a little extra effort put forth to drink more water in their stead. They should never replace a dose of water. I understand that there are certain meals that are almost unable to stand alone without a certain favorite soft drink. Similar to the way cereal always goes with milk, (like nearly every other breakfast food as well) I honestly can’t say I could eat a slice of pepperoni pizza or a delicious cheeseburger without a cold Coca Cola to wash it down. The taste of an iced Coke has always complemented these foods so perfectly throughout my life that without one, it just would not be the same. Another common replacement for a serving of water is coffee. A cup of joe, java; whatever you want to call it, many Americans rely on it to get them through the day. A nice cup of coffee is great and can really wake you up if you need it. The caffeine in coffee has been known to have a couple not-so-bad side effects.
