Q: In your opinion, which non-lethal tool on a police officer’s belt, either the taser, pepper spray, or the night stick, is best for handling the most dangerous suspects in a confrontation? A: I think all officers have under gone training to make that decision during confrontation depending on the threat to the individual, themselves and the public. All weapons can do damage if misused it’s up to training institutions to provide proper education and the officers themselves to use their discretion. Q: Do you think tasers are too powerful to be used to disarm or bring down a suspect? If yes, what if it was a last resort instead of using the gun in a non life-threatening situation?
Conducted Energy Devices, such as the Taser and Stun gun, can induce involuntary muscle contractions that temporarily incapacitate people. Directed Energy Devices use radiated energy to achieve the same effect as blunt force, without injury. Chemicals, including pepper spray, tear gas, and stink bombs, are used to incapacitate suspects so officers can catch them and get them handcuffed safely. Distraction Technology temporarily incapacitates people but causes little harm. This includes things like noise, bright lights, and laser dazzler.
A significant problem in this area is that police behavior is abusive of civilian rights, but it is also considered necessary and appropriate police procedure (Geller, 1996:7). In many cases police go too far when they excessively punch, kick, beat, and shoot people who pose no threat. Injuries and sometimes death result from the police use of restraints, chemical sprays, electro-shock weapons, batons,
When these leads make contact with a person it releases a 50,000 volts electrical shock for a period of five seconds, however, most taser’s generally pass only about 1200 volts. The 50,000 volts electrical shock then disrupts a person's nervous system, which renders the person immobilized and incapacitated with little to no harm done (CBC News, 2009). The most common models presently use by law enforcement officers are M26 and X26. Taser guns were designed to cause no lasting damage to people (CBC News, 2009). The police use of batons can break bones and cause bruising and their use of guns can easily kill.
These allow the Police officers to disable the violent of dangerous suspects, without having to use a lethal method of force. The armed Police would not shoot to wound, they would shoot to kill, and keep in mind that we still want the criminals to go to court of potentially jail for what they have done. The heartbreaking event of the two Police officers from Manchester Police force was a terrible event. The officers thought that they were going to a routine 999 call of someone's window being broken in, this all changed when a heavily armed, violent man turned up with a gun threatening to shoot both of them. That's exactly what
Politicians have stated thy will introduce new laws wanting tougher background checks, forced registration, and outright banning of military looking firearms. All these types of new laws will cut down on crime and make this country a safer place. But I believe the way to protect against a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun. First of all on the issue of it will cut down on violent crime, who are they kidding criminals rarely obey laws; studies show most criminals acquire guns through friends or theft. Adam Lanza the shooter at Newtown stole the guns he used from his mother.
Some people have a greater resistance to OC for different reasons rendering it less effective than normal when deployed. The advantages of OC spray when deployed properly could cause eyes and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, it causes pain, and often temporary blindness. It also causes psychological effects such as fear, anxiety and panic as well as swelling of mucous membranes of eyes, nose and throat, nasal and sinus discharge, coughing, shortness of breath, drying of the eyes, involuntary eye closure, painful burning of the skin, and hyperventilation . The expandable baton/ asp also has its advantages and disadvantages. The batons disadvantages are limited to
Treneice Lott Policing in American-7 Instructor, Joseph Pilliteri June 29, 2013 The two major less than lethal weapons that is use by law enforcement is pepper spray and stun guns. Pepper spray has an intense burning, breathing problems, and, temporary blindness and effectively disable your aggressor or attacker. Also, pepper spray can be effective on attacking animals to. The stun gun uses electrical current to the attacker and your assailant will have this intense pain and lose control of muscles. Stun gun is not lethal, but cause serious harm to someone with pace maker.
Instead, set restrictions and require a certain level of gun safety knowledge taught in a school based on the idea of self defense. Gun law enthusiasts would argue police have weapons and will protect us, that is true to an extent. The average time a 911 call is dispatched and arrived at is twenty-three minutes. Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke says this, " You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back ... While we wish we could be teleported to your home it ain’t going to happen.
Guns are not made for anything else but to kill. “With fewer handguns, there are fewer chances to use them. It is as simple as that” (Isaacson, 162). Women are considered very vulnerable targets’ to criminals. With a handgun they are at least able to have a fighting chance at their attacker.
