Many non-Catholics believe that we as Catholics should not have to confess our sins to a priest, but this is not what Christ wanted. The Sacrament of Penance is good for us and Christ wouldn’t have told His Church to have the sacrament if it wasn’t pertinent for our salvation. This sacrament was instituted by Christ so that we might be granted absolution from our sins after baptism. Although we are confessing our sins to a priest, by no means does that imply that Catholics believe that priests have the power to take away sins. The priests are there so that God can intercede through the priests. As our lives move forward, we sin against God, ourselves, and our neighbors. Reconciliation can keeps us on the straight path to God and help us to control ourselves so that we don’t harm one another. Since Christ has given us this sacred sacrament, we should trust that this is what He wanted for us. There is proof in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in Sacred Scripture, and in the Introduction to Catholicism that we as Catholics are entitled to go to confession in the way that Jesus’ taught us to. Many Catholics before us, who have wanted to be a part of the true Church, have accepted the sacraments, but not everyone knows why the Church commands us to do the things we do. We follow in the examples of the saints is because they followed the traditions of the Church, which includes the Sacrament of Penance. In Sacred Scripture, we see proof that telling our sins to a priest is what God wanted us to do for our salvation. In the book of James (5:16), it says “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” He is saying that we must not just confess our sins privately to God, but also to a priest. In the passage just before this one, James is
