History coursework: Question 1 Why did the British government decide to evacuate children from Britain’s major cities at the start of WW//? Evacuation took place for a number of reasons in Britain. Before the outbreak of war in 1939, several things concerned the British government about the safety of their citizens. The threat of a new technology like planes and new deadly bombs was increasing dramatically. Then between 1934 and 1935 Germany’s strength was growing, so Britain made secret plans to evacuate the women and children in case war broke out. Also in 1936 Hitler got himself involved in the Spanish civil war so he could test his new weapons, for example he bombed an area of Spain called Guernica which made Britain scared because he could turn on Britain at any time. In this essay I will be discussing all the different reasons why children were evacuated. One reason why Britain decided to evacuate most women and children because the children were going to be Britain’s future military, and would need them for when the present military get too old, or die. The Blitz was also happening at the start of the war in Poland, Holland, Belgium and France. France had also already evacuated children to the countryside and other countries, because they knew that Hitler was going to attack them at some point and wanted to make sure all the French children and women were safe. After the Blitz came the phoney war. The phoney war was a period of time when nothing ‘war-like’ was happening. There was no bombs, no frontline fighting etc… The British people thought that the war would possibly end soon so they returned to their families and homes in the main cities.
