BASIL Career Management Essay Why did I choose to be a medical assistant? First, the medical industry is growing at an extremely fast rate and people will always need medical help leaving my career to have much potential. “According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 3.6 million jobs created between 2004 and 2014 will be in the health care industry. And 8 out of 20 occupations projected to grow fastest are in health care. That's excellent news for health care professionals who work as medical assistants. The U.S. Department of Labor also recently reported that employment within the medical assisting field is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations through 2014 This exciting statistic shows the growing demand for medical professionals.” Second, with any career there comes some sort of education or training, and with colleges like Westwood, they give aspiring medical professionals the upper hand by offering short-term training programs so we can quickly gain the experience and education necessary to start work. Schools that typically focus on training you in the subjects you need to know on a daily basis, the “trade”, instead of attending a two or four year college and taking general education classes, or prerequisites, then to have finally started taking classes towards your degree. Schools like Westwood offer classes where you can be certified and train you in pharmacology, phlebotomy and pathophysiology. Last but not least, the money. Medical Assistants in Virginia make about $29,370 according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. It’s average money but it’s a good stepping stone into the medical field. I plan on furthering my education to either become a Diagnostic Sonographer or maybe a clinical research
