Melina Marchetta’s novel Saving Francesca is written from the point of view of Francesca, a sixteen year old girl who has moved to a new school and is trying to cope with her mother’s depression. Having the main character relating the story allows the reader to feel close to Francesca as the reader can understand her thoughts and feelings. However, because the story is told through Francesca’s eyes the reader has to rely on Francesca’s assessment of a situation. In many ways Francesca is an unreliable narrator. She does not fully understand what is happening to her mother and many of her comments about her mother are incorrect.
Book report 4/19/12 AOE “The Black Box” written by Julie Schumacher is a story about one girls struggle through depression. This novel is different from other stories because it is told through the perspective of her sister, Elena. Elena tells the story of her sister Dora’s depression and how it not only affected Dora’s life but the whole family’s life as well. This story takes place in Elena’s home where Dora one day announced that she wishes she was dead and overdosed on pills. Their overprotective mother immediately put Dora in the psych ward at Lorning Hospital.
Clinical Assessment “Mr. and Mrs. Lawson brought their 4-year-old adopted daughter, Clara, to see Dr. Mason, a psychiatrist. Clara was polite in greeting Dr. Mason, but did not smile and kept her gaze down as she took a seat. Mr. and Mrs. Lawson sat next to Clara and began explaining their concerns. They described Clara as a quiet child who has recently begun throwing temper tantrums, during which she is inconsolable.

In the ending of the novel, The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, protagonist Edna Pontellier experiences a series of “awakenings” that isolated her from others and ultimately lead her to a state of total solitude. Even after Edna had experienced her “awakening” she still could not escape those that she needed a break from. Edna was not content with the way she had been living her life. She had tried countless times to leave her past and begin a new part of her life, but it was impossible. Her only solution was to commit suicide.
