Whole Foods Market in 2010 Whole Market Foods was founded in Austin, Texas in 1980 as a local supermarket that provided natural and organic foods. Since 1980 Whole Foods Market has grown to be the largest natural and organic food market. They currently have 289 stores in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. The company had sales revenues of eight billion dollars in 2009. Whole Foods Market’s mission statement is: “Whole Foods, Whole People, and Whole Planet”. The “Whole Foods” portion of the mission statement is defined by the company looking locally and globally to find the best organic food with the least amount of additives to put on the shelves for their customers. The “Whole People” portion is what they do for their employees. They recruit the best people and empower them to make decisions in operational situation. By doing this I believe the employees take ownership in the company because they believe their voice is heard. The “Whole Planet” portion is what the company does for the whole planet. They support organic farming on a global basis and they believe this will help protect the environment for the farmers and protect our greatest asset the earth. They offer shoppers promotions such as the “nickel for bag” to eliminate waste in the form of the plastic bags used. They encourage less toxic cleaning products for companies. They also contribute significantly to environmental programs. They actively educate customers about senseless killings of dolphin and other animals such as veal. They refuse to sell any animal tested products. These are just a few of the procedures that they use to get their message across. John Mackey co-founder and CEO, has been with the company since its beginning in 1980. He has been behind the company’s success from the beginning.
