An Inspector Calls In this essay I will examine each character in detail to establish if any of them are responsible for Eva Smith's death. I shall also consider Eva's part in her own downfall. Inspector Goole had a way of making people think and do what he wanted. Although he didn't seem to get any extra information out of the other characters he soon made them realise that Eva Smith had died a horribly painful death and they had all contributed in making her want to end her life. He got them to tell each other their sins and secrets.
Eva smith who also goes by the name of Daisy Renton has some sort of connection to every member of the Birling family. The writer makes sure that we never fully understand Eva so that we keep questing about who or what she really is. During the book she is presented as a leader. We see this most when she is working for Mr Birling in her factory. She takes the lead in a protest against their wages and demands higher pay.
Mr Birling’s, who showed no sorrow or sympathy for a former employee's death, was ruthless in dismissing her after the strike. Accusing her of being a ringleader. Reinstating all the other employees, except her, must have been very demoralising to Ms Smith. Moreover, Mr Croft, showed nor compassion or sympathy for a former lover, despite the fact that he claimed they had separated on amicable terms. I believe that he lying and that he left this woman in a state of distress that contributed to her state of mind when she committed suicide.
Because of the son’s death, Creon’s wife, too, killed herself out of grief. For once, Creon felt terrible about a situation he thought that he had created, but in turn, it was actually Antigone who had made his family fall. Her personal actions led Creon to killing her and therefore killing his family. Antigone’s actions brought suffering to everyone around her, including herself. She was to be buried alive, but in turn, hung herself.
The third thing was that Tom Robinson's death, his wife had taken a job with Mr. Link Deas, Tom's employer. The Ewell family harassed her until Mr. Deas set Bob Ewell straight with a threat to have him thrown in jail. Alexandra was worried about the incidents, but Atticus insisted that there was no reason to be alarmed. Bob Ewell had had his revenge on everyone involved in the case, and it was all over
Esmeralda’s culture and heritage tend to restrict personal growth within her family. When Esmeralda’s mother wants to make more money for the family she starts looking for a job. In order to go to work, Esmeralda’s mom has to leave home early and come home late. This leaves all the chores and cooking to Esmeralda and her siblings. When other families in their barrio find out about this they begin to resent the family.
And what makes it worth it? The mortician’s in the article make the choice to go into the job field knowing all of the negative comments that get made about them. An example from the book is when an interview is being done with a funeral director and he states that, “People think we’re cold, unfriendly, and unfeeling (Life in Society 79).” Even though they know these comments are going to be made about them they still go to work every day and get their job done. It is as if these people who work as funeral directors/morticians realize death is something that happens and it is uncontrollable. Although most people cannot grasp the fact that it happens these workers are fine with it and that is what makes it worth it.
I had an affair with my boss’s wife at my last job. • Q: Why do you want to work here? A: My mum told me to get a job or she won’t keep giving me money. • Q: Why do you want to leave your current job? A: I honestly cannot stand that bunch of idiots anymore.
After the fall they acted as though they were afraid of me. Some of my co-workers even stop speaking to me as if they would get in trouble for talking to me. When I would go to the job to drop off my paper work, I would get a fake “How are you doing?” As if they did not really want to know. I would reply “Just want to get back to the old me.” After all I could not sue the company because it was a work related injury which meant Workers Compensation would have to supplement my income. My finances were diminishing.
I myself had to make this decision to return or not to work on February 9, 1979 when my son was born. I made the decision return to work after my son was born. Many people feel a mother should be at home with her child instead of working. Many families’ make the decision for mom to return to the working world due to these reasons’ income, self-esteem of mom, and the relationship with the child. Income has always been a concern for families and losing one income can be devastating to a family, and on the other hand there is the single mother that really does not have a choice, but to go to work and support her child.
