I decided to go back to school for quite a few reasons. The main factors for my returning to school includes my family and stability also plays big role in my returning to school. My reasons for going back to school is to gain communication skills, become a good role model for my children, if I decide to have any, gain independence and seek profitable employment that would be profitable for me. I tried a few classes here and there and it was something that seemed to be a temporary thing to occupy time. I was young and didn’t realize what college was going to mean to my adulthood challenges. After finally accepting a full time job that could lead to a career for some time it became clear that college would have been a good choice for me to have been successful. I quickly began to attend college classes through my employer to make gains in my career and try to possibly secure my future.
I graduated high school twenty-five years ago. Since then, I have raised a family and bounced from job to job. A college education is important to me because I have finally matured enough to complete my education and fulfill my dream of becoming a college graduate. In order to succeed in college, it takes dedication, discipline, and structure. Throughout my lifetime, I have always struggled with these.
Writing this poem allowed me to look back into those past experiences and let go. I can honestly say that until writing this paper, I was allowing my past experiences hold me emotionally hostage. When I graduated from Highline Community College and decided to attend The Evergreen State College, little did I realize how impactful this college would be; affecting my desire to express my thoughts and views about the world. The Evergreen State College opened the door to writing; a door that had been closed for a very long time. Although I hadn’t yet become comfortable writing about my past during the first few quarters of school, I enjoyed writing for academic growth.
