Based off this definition the Anna Todd Jennings scholarship is not being racist. Yes the scholarship is only for white people, but not because Caucasian is the superior race. Daniels says, “The Anna Todd Jennings scholarship is a subtle but nonetheless dangerous expression of racism”. This statement is false because if every race specific concept was addressed as racism, the world would turn mad. Most races have scholarships offered just to them, so having one for white people should not cause a problem.
Status groups share a common lifestyle and consumption patterns. It helps an individual to get a social prestige. There could be potential clashes between statuses. The final power is legal. It suggests that individuals can also gain advantage through memberships in organisations.
It is the same as an American citizen who has rights that are a privilege that comes with being a citizen. It is not a person's fault that they are an American citizen and have certain privileges over someone who is not a citizen, nor is it the fault of a white person to have certain privileges because they were born in a dominant white world. The problem now becomes what do we do about it. If we open up our eyes and see that this is a fault in our society we could improve the situation. This can be seen in other nations as well.
The state of our countries economic status does not discriminate (Campbell, 2010). It has affected white people as well as people of color. Could it be that we are fueling our own fire by being so overly concerned with skin color instead of being concerned with one’s abilities and attributes? Campbell also states that the “myth” of white privilege should be opposed and challenged as well as every other stereotype. I am not comfortable with calling white privilege a myth because it is a real issue that needs to be dealt with but I do know that we have to start somewhere.
While whites are often made to feel confident and comfortable with their position of their nation as ‘home’ the ‘other’ often does not. White people can think of themselves as belonging to and making social systems work for them. Feeling that your opinions about national issues are represented in the public discourse has been referred to by Hage as ‘governmental belonging’ ‘Governmental belonging’ gives white people the belief that they have a right to contribute to the governance of their nation, for instance commenting on immigration and who should and should not be allowed in. In Australia, this thinking has resulted in policies – such as multiculturalism which embraces the diversity of minority ethnic groups – being seen as a gift given by the dominant group to minority ethnic groups. In our “multicultural” era, we have studies of “Chicano” narrative, “Asian
They define social excellence through the following sentence phrases, “Social excellence: a state of perpetual generosity, curiosity, positivity, and openness to limitless possibility. A desire to intentionally connect with others. The ability to engage in deep meaningful conversation. Acting in a responsible and respectable manner, with high expectations of others. Being authentic and living everyday with integrity as the best version of yourself.
Does white privilege really exist? White privilege. Before answering the question does white privilege exist we have to first understand what is white privilege? In my opinion and from the knowledge I gained in black studies white privilege is the advantage and benefit the white people have over other races. They can be socially and economically endowed and they can be exempt for certain burdens or liabilities.
But in reality Privileges makes a gender or ethnicity superior and dominate among other. Privileges exist with in our society but they are meant to make one ethnicity or gender superior to others. Many people think of a privilege as a ticket to do things that others can’t. In the Reading “White Privilege and Male Privilege” by Peggy McIntosh, she explain that a privilege is a certain right that a race or gender is given and not earned. McIntosh goes as far as to say that “one’s life is not what one makes it; many doors are open for certain people through no virtues of their own” (McIntosh, 9).
Sailors inadvertently introduced these diseases in 1492, including smallpox, measles, mumps, whooping cough, influenza, chicken pox, and typhus, to the Americas. People who lived in Africa had developed some immunities to these diseases because they had long existed among Europeans and have been exposed to them. However, the Native Americans had no such immunities due to their isolation. Adults and children alike were stricken by several epidemics of the listed viruses, which caused a massive decrease in populations throughout the Americas. In Mexico and Peru, many millions of people died.
Chapter 7 in the text discusses Whites/European Americans. The Chapter 7 PowerPoint stated: • Whites ➢ Should view diversity as a potential source of competitive advantage to be embraced rather than fearing it as lowering their individual power. • Organizations ➢ Should proactively work toward diversity to increase competitiveness for all, resulting in more rather than in fewer opportunities and advantages for Whites. ➢ Should include Whites as active participants and allies in the diversity process is a key step to reduce resistance. The recommendations even though are short and sweet I believe aren’t enough.
