Where am I in the Garden? (My kindergarten theories and philosophies) Final paper Melissa Gordon Merrian Gagnon ECE311 January 29, 2012 Introduction The age group I have chosen, in case you haven’t already guessed is 5 and 6 year olds, kindergarten. What is my role and purpose as a teacher in my potential kindergarten class? In this brief paper I intend to give you an outline of a few of my teaching philosophies and theories. Having a Plan As a teacher I think that we all have high expectations of our children. However, I feel it is up to us as teachers to bring out the best in the children that are left in our care. From my experience so far I know that this can pose a challenge sometimes. As a teacher, my philosophy is to personalize the learning experience. I want my children to feel at home and want to come to school because of all the new and exciting things they will learn. I want to engage their imagination and make learning fun. As we have learned from our text, language is a big part of kindergarten. Children must familiarize themselves with the English language so they can form phonemic awareness. My plan will be to incorporate many things around the classroom and in my lesson plans that will support this. My plan is to engage children in talking, reading with lot of repartition singing and dramatization. Literature in forms of music and movement, stories, art all play a big part in our children’s early literacy. One of the keys to literacy is writing, writing unlocks the door to higher literacy. As a teacher I intend to form strategies that unlock their full potential. I must focus on two levels of involvement, emotional well being and feeling involved. Children must feel at ease and want to act with a level of spontaneity, they should be able to show vitality and self-confidence. I must also must set up a
