Antibiotics refer to drugs that are used for treating infections caused by bacteria. When used in the proper way, they are capable of fighting most illnesses caused by bacteria. They kill the bacteria or make them incapable of reproducing in the body, therefore, reducing chances of causing any disease (Walsh, 2003 pp 3). Antibiotics are used when the bacteria are too much for the white blood cells to the extent that some other forces are needed to overpower the bacteria. Examples of antibiotics include penicillin which was the first antibiotic, amoxicillin and benzyl penicillin. These are antibiotics that have been used for a long time. Antibiotics are prescribed by physicians to treat or prevent infections. A physician prescribes antibiotics patients who have a weakened immune system. Healthy people with strong immune systems are also given preventive antibiotics by physicians if they have surgery that can lead to high risk of infection. Additionally prescription antibiotics are given to patients traveling to parts of the world where they have a high risk of getting infected (Mack & Relman, 2010 pp 147-149). In all instances, the physician has the responsibility to decided whether the antibiotics are necessary. There are instances when antibiotics quit working as they become ineffective in fighting infections and form a resistance. Antibiotic resistance is a process by which micro organisms gain the ability to withstand or resist the effects that antibiotics have on them. This is mostly due to the overuse of antibiotics. Scientists have realized that bacteria that are harmless carry genes which are resistance to antibiotics and transmit them to harmful bacteria. If antibiotic resistant bacteria become the most common source of bacterial infection, this would cause a health crisis all over the world. Therefore, in order to make antibiotics more effective and
