When Personal Values and Business Protocols Conflict ABSTRACT This paper provides an explanation of how to handle the dilemma of personal values conflicting with business principles. Referencing five articles, several options are given on how to handle this conflicting situation. All articles discuss that personal values have an important part in business protocols. Using personal values to gage the level of the issue, will allow you to make the correct decision about the problem. The three options include, justifying the actions because the job is worth more, voicing your opinion to see if it makes a difference and lastly, leaving the job to find one where there is mutual agreement in values. “Considering the substantial amount of time that the average person spends at work, one would assume that a person would join a company whose professional values echo the employee’s personal beliefs. The truth is far removed from this notion (Clancy, 2011).” A person’s values versus business success is a battle that some have yet to win. There are several ways you can approach this dilemma. One is to disregard your values by keeping your head down and completing the task. Second to voice your opinion and hope that changes can be made or finally, to leave the job and try to find another that better matches your personal values. The vital question is how important is preserving your personal value and is the job worth it. Before making the decision to stay or go, it is important to gage the issue at hand. “We all get into situations in which we can’t move. We know in our guts, and ethics are connected directly to instincts, where our comfort lines are and when we are being asked to expand the parameters of our value and belief systems (Sonnesyn, 1991, p. 34).” Having a gut reaction accompanied with feelings of unease, will invoke questions of
