In recent years, Melbourne’s population size expanded rapidly, it has re-ignited a long-term argument between urban consolidation and urban sprawl. Melbourne’s development has been dominated by expanding low-density suburbs in the previous years,and only a few degree of development of consolidation has proceeded. However Melbourne envisages just over half of all new dwellings constructed between 2001 and 2030,about 16,000 per year,will be located within the built-up area. The rest will be built in the fringe Growth Areas in the thirty years, which means for Melbourne, the future is planned to be consolidated. (The Age, 2008) The essay will clear up some conceptions of sprawl and consolidation, clarifying why that urban consolidation may actually be a more viable and sustainable option for Melbourne in the future. The expansion of human populations away from the central urban areas into rural areas is called urban sprawl. (Mieg &Töpfer, 2013)Urban sprawl has the benefit because of that low density area is more environmental friendly, the large amount vegetations filled in the low-dense area can absorb the carbon dioxide made by the activities of human beings, which causes less amounts of air and water has been polluted by the pollutants. It has been observed that the more green areas are preserved in low-dense areas and there are more open spaces for people to entertain.(Xu,2014) But at the meanwhile,in the reality,developing low-dense area need to replace farmland or open space. However, the approach of urban sprawl will causing the lost of open space and natural habitats because of land reclamation. Concerned with social aspects, developing low-dense area need to take up space,increase driving time.
