What Teaching Means to Me Teaching is a noble profession and to be a teacher by choice is even nobler. Teachers are the makers of history. Their affects are timeless and no one knows where their influences end. Teaching, in fact, it is very unusual from any other profession. It’s not merely an occupational tool as some view, but their ‘golden touch’ in making a good citizen – a clear distinction. Teaching is learning as well as stimulating. Teaching is challenging, yet trying in unthinkable ways. Teaching is thoughtful. Teaching is exhilarating, it’s exciting every day. Teaching is motivating, it’s inspiring. Teaching is maddening, it’s scary at times. Teaching is vitalizing. Teaching is taxing. Teaching is collaborating. Teaching is growing. Teaching is dividing as well as equalizing. Teaching is a loving. Teaching is a blessing. Teaching makes me laugh and it makes me cry. It has been sailing on the rough sea in recent times yet teachers have managed to keep intact the age old beauty and magnetism of teaching. Every day is a brand new day for a teacher and every child a very special person. It has faced many ups and downs yet moved on with the same spirit of beauty and charm. It is not just profession for livelihood but goes far beyond the intrinsic human values. As John F. Podojil rightly asserts, “Teaching is not a profession; it’s a passion. Without passion for your subject and a desire for your students to learn and be the best in the world, then we have failed as a teacher and failure is not an option.” Indeed, a teacher has to be an inspirational and constant driving force to a child, and then only they become somebody in life. Great teachers are remembered not for the subject they teach, but for inspiring their students and for unlocking their ability to dream.
