Testimony: Their owners "really love these animals but they're loving them to death," says Tim Harrison, director of Outreach For Animals, a rescue operation in Dayton, Ohio. (Guarino, 2011, Oct 20) 5. Document: To meet the demands of those who keep exotic animals as pets, dealers often have to take the animals from their native lands. This disrupts the ecosystems from which they are stolen, and can disrupt the ecosystems to which they are taken if they escape
I chose this quote because it tells us that killing animals happens faster than someone gathering knowledge. Next, this book relates to society because many animals in the world are becoming endangered today. An example of this is the Bonobos from the book. Also, there are many problems in the world today just like the war in Congo. Around the world there are Army’s like the one in this book, that do not care what they are shooting at or killing, even if it is a poor animal that has done nothing wrong.
The people behind us clapped. The old man waved them off and sat back down in the skiff to fan his face again”. The way Sonny explains what is happening seems like he has no clue what was going on and why they are doing the things they do. Another thing that happened in the chapter was Sonny and Keo went to catch a shark to show the director what a real one looks like. The boys set a trap for the shark and waited until the next day to find the buoy twenty feet underwater.
Dogs are often kept in cages, which may be stacked from floor to ceiling with multiple animals living in each one. The cages in which these dogs are kept generally have wire flooring, which allows the dog's waste to slick through the a collection tray underneath. This allows the operators of the puppy mills to save time by never walking the dogs or giving them the necessary space to naturally eliminate. In addition to being employed for deplorable purposes, these cages can also injure the dogs' legs and paws, and the conditions that they promote lead to disease. Mill dogs may live exclusively outside, where they are exposed to environmental conditions which harm them, or conversely live entirely indoors in cages.
Sharks, an animal that has survived multiple stages of extinction and surprisingly an extremely shy animal. The documentary Sharkwater by Rob Stewart is an extremely eye opening movie. The documentary primarily takes place in the Galapagos and the Cocos Island. During this video Rob shows the audience things that don’t get talked about on the news like shark attacks do. After watching the documentary I was shocked about what was happening to these animals and how big of an industry it is.
Hell in Kennels: Issues in Southern Oregon Animal Shelter Practices and Funding Veronica E. Watt Rogue Community College Hell In Kennels: Issues in Southern Oregon Animal Shelter Practices and Funding “‘People wonder whether animals love one another. If you define love as an enduring, long-term bond in which creatures travel together, consort together, whine when alone, seek one another out,’ engage in various kinds of ‘voluntary, cooperative behavior,’ and refrain from harsh treatment such as by ‘not biting as hard as they could,’ then ‘if you say that humans can love one another, you can say that about animals, too.’” - (Mark Bekoff in Clemmitt, 2010) The above quote, by a professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the
Not just of the breeding dogs in the farm but most of their puppies as well. As cute as the puppy in the pet shop may seem you should always buy from a proper breeder or an animal shelter this way you will know that you are not contributing towards puppy mills and killing innocent dogs. This is one dog that was lucky enough to be saved from a puppy mill. If the dogs are not rescued and given another home from the animal shelter they will be put down and the owner of the puppy mills get away with murder. Not just of the breeding dogs in the farm but most of their puppies as well.
(blackfishmovie.com) Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale who has not only injured several people in captivity but killed. Behind the scene footage and shocking interviews are shown throughout the film to present a convincing case against keeping these wild animals for human entertainment. This emotional, heart touching story challenges us to reconsider our relationship with nature. It reveals how little we know about these mammals. This documentary explores how the harmful living conditions may be causing orcas to lash out violently toward their trainers.
Ethical treatment of animals SOC120: Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility In this essay I will discuss what the ethical treatment of animals is. I will go into the history of where it began and touch base on animal welfare and animal rights that are in place today as a result of the efforts made by concerned organizations. When I was growing up I really enjoyed class field trips to the zoo and petting farms. As a child I didn’t realize what unethical treatment of animals really was. My understanding was that we were not supposed to be mean to animals.
The states need to come up with strict laws that will cut numbers of animal abuse. The animals in the factories are getting treated terribly. “They call their revolution (animal rights), but the changes PETA has won for farmed animals, while numerous, are not victories for animal rights so much as for animal welfare: fewer animals per cage, better-regulated slaughter, less-cramped transport, and the like”(Unknown author). PETA stands up for animal welfare and want to raise awareness so they can pass new laws on how the animals are treated inside
