Canada has contributed to both world wars with no hesitation. In World War One Canada immediately went to war with Britain to aid on the battlefront and then World War Two they traveled across the ocean again to help Britain. At this time Canada was not the most well-known country in the world, but it does more than expected for its size in population. Canada made its sovereignty and international stage for being such a small populated country. Canada should be proud of its performance in the wars and also proud of the fact that the world, especially the United States, no longer sees Canada as a little brother. During the beginning of the war the Germans took over the ridge because of the advantage they could gain by its height. Later on as Canadian forces joined in with the allies on the third attack against the ridge, the Canadians took a major role by supplying the army with approximately 100,000 men. “There were four main Canadian units and for the first time they all fought together like a single unit with little to no mistakes under the British General Sir Julian Byng (Linda Connor pg. 296).” Byng did not win with luck, but with a trained army, heavy artillery, a strong air force, and tactical plans. The allies created the plan to fool the German soldiers believing they were going to invade Calais instead of Normandy. The beach was split into five code named sections Utah, Omaha, Sword, Gold, and lastly Canadians had Juno. The beach was stormed on June 6th, 1944 this day was named D-Day Operation Overlord. “The Canadian and allied forces had a total of 156 000 troops, 6500 ships and 12 000 aircrafts (Linda Connor pg. 381).” The total casualty for the Canadians of this battle was 340 killed, 574 wounded, and 47 captured these numbers were a lot lower than the war of Dieppe, and the invasion of Italy. Not even a year later the Canadians and the allies has pushed the Germans back to Germany causing the suicide of Adolf Hitler, and the surrender of the German army.
