The Background What makes Singapore a unique place? Singapore is a small island that is located in South East Asia, between Malaysia and Indonesia. Singapore is known as the most developed city in the areas of economy, culture, and education. The reason why Singapore is named with a special phrase “A tiger in South East Asia” is that Singapore is the most animated city with economic activities. Naturally, when a city contributes many offices or factories to support the economy, the environment will be destroyed. However, Singapore is successful in harmonizing and protecting the environment. It is able to say that all activities of Singapore people closely connect to their surroundings. Therefore, the relationship between the environment and the economy is considered as the identity of Singapore, but upon looking at other cities in Japan, Korea, or another developed Asian countries, the relationship is not difficult to find in those countries. Consequently, what is really the identity of Singapore? The answers will vary depending on the periods of time and the standpoint of each individual. However, generally Singapore’s identity relates to the lion head symbol of this city. It is not as pure and simple as a symbol, but also represents Singapore people’s pride and identity. “The lion was chosen as it is a powerful and historic symbol of Singapore’s status as the Lion City and symbolises three national values: courage, excellence and strength.” (The Lion Head Symbol Head, n.d, p.1). Otherwise, the head lion symbol and the historical values of the city have reflections on the culture, and an art work of Singapore.
