The American Civil War lasted from 1861-1865 and led to more than 618,000 Americans killed. The war began on April 12, 1861, when confederate forces in Charleston, South Carolina, attacked a U.S. military establishment at Fort Sumter. But what led brothers to fight against brothers? Today we realize slavery as a moral issue, but in the nineteenth century, people saw this as a solution to economic problems rather than a moral issue. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 prohibited slavery. The South had an economic interest in the spread of slavery to the new territories
