In most juvenile homicide cases, they are automatically put into the adult justice system for committing the adult-like crime. Some of these children are receiving punishments such as life in prison, even life in prison without parole. Although, the kids may have committed the “adult” crime it is unethical for youths to be tried as adults. There has been many a time in my life, as I’m sure there has been in everyone else’s, that being given the second chance has made the difference. But I do believe, however trite this may sound, that if you do an adult crime, you do adult time. Minors that commit certain serious crimes should be tried as adults. Some youths are even known to commit crimes without thought because they know they cannot be tried as adults. Violent, preventable crimes by minors have long plagued America’s larger cities but have scarcely been punished because of the age of the perpetrators.
One example of this is that more police officers can go onto the police force, so that the young person sees them everywhere and believes that they mightcatch them. Specific deterrence says that if a single person is punished strongly for onecrime, then they will not commit this crime again out of fear of punishment. For example,a youth who commits a crime is put into a program. Crime prevention strategies that aresituational aim to tell young people that the benefits of crime are not worth the eventual punishment. This is to let people know that the punishment always far outweighs thecrime.
The first thing that I would change would be to enforce harsher punishment for crimes so as to defer young teens from making the same mistakes again. Now-a-days a young person can commit a crime, and get a small punishment from the juvenile system and be out the next day. They eventually learn that if they keep committing these crimes, then they will keep being able to get away with it with only a small punishment. Kids these days are not stupid, they will eventually catch on to the fact that they are not being punished nearly as harsh as they should be and that alone will tell them that they should just keep doing it. The supporters of this approach believe that the young people have to be taught that whatever negative action they do will result to consequences that they will have to deal with without any exemptions. The punitive approach advocates that the manner to teach the consequences of negative behaviours to young people is by way of heavier punishment. The advocates of this approach perceive young offenders as adults already, and so they do not mind seeing these juveniles going to adult prisons because they deserve
The Adult Justice System Does More Harm Than Good. The rehabilitation system for juveniles is a must, to keep them from stepping into the vicious cycle of crime. To begin, the juvenile court was started over a hundred years ago. A basic theory motivating the juvenile court has been that all youth offenders need not go through the adult justice system. Therefore, the juvenile court was created to handle juvenile delinquents on the foundation of their youth instead of their crimes.
A Juvenile or Adult? With all the crimes committed today in the United States, teenagers and also young adults carry the highest rates according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The crimes committed consist of robberies, burglaries, thefts, threats and some murders. Before sentencing, the question that goes back and forth is if wither they are to be tried as a juvenile or adult. Through personal opinions and experience, kids up to seventeen should not be tried as adults, because even though they should know right from wrong at that age, there minds are still not fully developed to completely understand how serious the consequences.
More and more graduated sanctions are being built which are trying to break they cycle of delinquency by ensuring that juvenile offenders learn that there are consequences to their actions each time they misbehave, beginning with the very first time and hopefully it will be the last. Waiting for kids to be tried on their ninth offence is not very effective. Many new ideas and laws have helped which include segregating jailed youths from adult criminals, developing vocational education programs for juvenile offenders, providing educational services in juvenile detention facilities, ensuring that educational programs in juvenile correctional facilities meets the same standards as public schools, and establishing residential or community-based sentencing options for juvenile offenders suffering from mental illnesses. Past and present trends can be used as a learning tool to deter future trends from being the same as prior trends. Having people get more involved with what is going on around him or her and getting serious about making changes so he or she does not fall victim to any type of crime. People taking stand and alerting the police whenever a crime is occurring, is the way for the criminal justice system to step and take control of the situation. “Long-term trends in other violent crimes are difficult to discern because the only measure available before the 1970s was crime reported and recorded by the police.
