Firstly, amateur talents in drawing and watercolour were encouraged as part of a good bourgeois education in the upper-class milieu. For instance, Berth Morisot and her sister Edma, both French painters, were encouraged at an early age to porsue art studying with two private art instructors Geoffry-Alphonse Chocarne and later with Joseph Guichard. Secondly, other women turned for education to the studios of established artists or to private academies often at great expense. Courses were based on the mastery of human anatomy through the study of the live nude model. Lastly, many women turned to portraiture, genre painting, landscape and still life.

Marisol first studied art in evening drawing classes at the Jepson School in Los Angeles when she was sixteen. By this time, she was already proficient in representational drawing. Catholicism infused Marisol with beliefs in mystery, miracles, intercession and awareness of a spiritual/supernatural aspect of life that dominated both her character and work as an artist. She was encouraged by her father to pursue her interest in art, so Marisol moved to Paris to study for a year in 1949, at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts, she was instructed to mimic the painting style of Pierre Bonnard. Marisol moved to New York City in 1950, looking for more abstract approaches.
For a first time reader for me-on the kitchen reading with great intrigue, with this main character who instantly grabbed my attention. It must have taken me about an hour to read this story and take side notes to wright this reader response-I wanted to catch every detail. Elisa was a great character, she was interesting and remarkable-She had a gift for growing Chrysanthums’s and she was passionate about it. When someone shows great interest in her gardening – you can tell she was passionate about because she would tell you everything she knows about gardening. Overall it was a very smooth reading; it had points in the story where you can see Elisa at her good and points.
