1. What are the three standards of writing concluded by the study that are examined in one of the articles that we’ve read? a. As stated in the article “What Makes Writing Good? An Essential Question for Teachers”, the three standards are: “Perspective 1: Good writing = Good thinking and Good Communicating” (222), “Perspective 2: Good Writing = Structure and Clarity” (323), and “Perspective 3: Good Writing = Purpose, Voice, and Correctness” (324). 2. What is CBM? CBM is an assessment tool or system that can be used by teachers to assess or monitor the progress of students’ writing performance over a certain period of time. It can also be used to evaluate certain instructional programs. 3. In your opinion, can CBM be used to teach the three different ways of judging “good writing”? Why or why not? In my opinion, CBM is a useful system of assessment for teaching the first two levels of the pyramid that we drew in class, for they are quantitative aspects of writing. Ideas are an issue that one cannot count, nor can one teach to have good ideas. Therefore, I would consider “good writing” the last and more complex stage of the writing process and one cannot reach this stage if the two lower levels are poor. Moreover, as the article “What Makes Writing Good? An Essential Question for Teachers” presents: “A good writer surprises the reader with unexpected moves.” (323). we realize that this category of writing is subjective.
