I do agree with Drevno in this article. It seems like everybody is trying to look like the ideal figure, but as we all know the majority is not ideal so we try to become that attractive figure that we think everybody wants. Drevno says in her article “Everywhere you look you will find images of women and men who typify what our society considers “beautiful”(P.2). What that quote means is that “unreal” beauty is all around us because our world believes that that is the true meaning of beauty when according to Drevno it is not. A friend of mine named Moe, was in a sense overweight and he didn’t like it because of what other people thought about it.
Synthesis Essay : Beauty Due to today's society, the definition of beauty differs depending on our beliefs. Beauty can be defined in a multitude of perspectives, one approach derives from physical beauty, the other attains from the interior and authentic self. The concept of beauty is often overlooked and is masked by the light of today's society. Peiss advocates the culture of beauty by mentioning the light of today's conception of beauty and comparing that with the neglected traditional view that formed the history of woman's antiquity. The author purported, "...
Society’s view on certain groups of people has changed with time, but the way people perceive and stereotype others shows conformity to what others feel is correct or acceptable, although those perceptions may or may not be true. Stereotypes are these images or generalizations that have been given to groups of people to portray the way society views their actions, standard of living, or even the type person they are. These views of certain groups are merely just opinions or generalizations and do not represent all the people justly and can cause misconceptions of a person’s ability, personality, or just as a person as a whole. Of those misconceptions on certain stereotypes, the Hispanics have been portrayed as this figure in society that is seen as a lazy group not willing to work. Through research and what is seen in today’s world we see this stereotype being thrown around attempting to classify Hispanics, where in reality we see a growing number of Hispanics in the workforce.
Is changing the way you look or act in order to fit in with a certain social group ever a good idea? What might be some benefits and/or drawbacks to doing so?” Some have said that changing your personality, look or act to fit certain group is a bad idea; however, I say we all have different personality or habits and it’s very hard to change other people change other people so I would say people should change or adjust their personality to fit certain group because the person can be socialized and nothing wrong to change and be a better person. Human is a very complicated creature, and because we all have different personality, it makes us more complicated to understand or fit each other’s. Every person with have certain way to conduct others and because of that, a person must be socialized and do not isolated himself with the rest of world else he/she will modernize as everyone else. Many times I see people in school or work that some people cannot hangout with others is either they are stubborn or the group do not want to let the guy in their group because he is so persistent.
The majority of workers don’t like to be defined by their beauty, they like to be defined by their work ethic, productivity, knowledge, and character. When the stereotype of beauty defines workers, countless other characteristics, arguably more important, are left
The belief that Physical beauty is more important than intelligence is a very common habit throughout the world, especially in schools and as a result, people may often conform to accept values of appearances rather than focusing on the values of a persons gifts and talents. Conformity can be involuntary, so someone could not even know that they were following others. Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth (Kennedy). What this is saying is if a person conforms to others then they’re giving up their freedom to whom they’re conforming. If they do this, they cannot grow, or have their own thoughts or opinions or act on them.
She was caring, intelligent, and ambitious. Since Gloria was judged by the way she looked, no one realized how great of a person she was. We need to take more time to get to know people instead of judging by physical images because “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, if you would have gotten to know her, she would have looked more attractive. I believe that anyone can be pretty, if Gloria would have put her hair down and dressed in more trendy clothes people would have thought she was very attractive. Even someone that is “pretty” can have an ugly personality, so you never know unless you get to know a person.
Pride A dignified sense of what is due to oneself or one’s position or character. So many different twists and variations of the word “pride”, but pride is what drives people, what makes them persevere and fight through tough times. It dictates what kind of a person one can be, one with too much pride can be unliked and overthrown. Someone who lacks pride could be pushed over easily, but one must find that balance in between and hold it there. In times of kings and queens people would speak of leaders to prideful that they can not see past the truth they do not realize their own corruption.
Another thing that this test told me was that I am judging. Apart of my life is to judge people off of their outer appearance to learn exactly how this person wants me to talk them. Also with certain personality traits I judge people just to see if they will be a solid person to be associating myself with. This judging is the way that I was raised. I also believe that my perception can be a little skewed sometimes, because I look at the best in people and have been walked all over for doing that.
Prejudgment A lot of people prejudge everything in life, it’s a natural thing. Once they see a person they quickly determine whether this person is good or bad, wealthy or poor, thin or chubby, beautiful or ugly. They also decide if one is good or bad from one’s religious not because of the person himself. And because they think that judging people is a cool thing. They not only judge people, but also they can judge a product or a situation.
