With the number of personnel the rebels had vs union was little to none, they held off the north by smart tactics of well-trained officers. It should have been much easier battle based on the advantages he had at hand. I don’t know if the outcome would have been different had not Stonewell Jackson died, from my prospective he must have been a man who was looked up to with his military experience and victories. Once Lee and Davis surrendered and went home in peace it lifted much worry and weight off Lincoln’s shoulders. Over all I do think that Lincoln was overall the driving force who drove the country to unity once again, Could he have done better I do believe so.
Attorney Nolan offers a different view of General Lee and his accomplishments and undoing’s on the battlefield. I believe it was clear from the start that the South did not have the manpower or the resources to make the battle equally weighted on both sides. General Lee believed he could win the battle if they could pursue a strategic offensive against the North. However it became clear to him that the “superior numbers of the enemy” was a big concern. If he was a great leader why fight a battle you know you can’t win and lose so many lives, especially since Lee knew he would be eventually defeated.
The generals in the North were not as qualified as the ones in the South, the North had McClellan, for instance who was a excellent general but did not have the power in him to send his men out to battle when he should have. As time went on the Northern generals learned from their mistakes and more importantly from their enemy generals of the South. In the beginning of the war the strategies that were used by the generals of the North were very unsuccessful, and as time went on they obtained information on new strategies that would later help them win the war. Another reason why the North was victorious was because of their strong navy. This Navy knew how to get knocked down and return to it's feet and finish it's job.
He was the most celebrated, famous, and respected American in his generation. He was basically a simple man, one who was also good at solving problems. He was also very modest and did not feel like he was important. Many thought of his personality as being hard and crude but, those that knew him well thought of him as a gentle and forgiving man, very shy and reserved. Ulysses S. Grant was well known for General and Commander of the union armies during the late years of the American civil war, and the 18th president of the United States.
In my opinion, the Gettysburg Address is such a great speech because of its power opening, brevity, and a perusable ending. First of all, Abraham Lincoln started his speech with a powerful opening, which impressed people of different diversities. For example, the quote “Four score and seven years ago our father brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” shows his favor for an equal society. In the quote, Lincoln mean that a long time ago, people fought for the liberty of the United States, and they believed that all men are equal. Lincoln ensured that all people including the black and white people, are created equally.
The difference between the soldier’s and the Indian’s weapons were too great. All the Indians wanted were to live in peace and The Great Father, as the United States President was called, promised this time and time again but his promise was never kept. One of the best known
Abraham Lincoln saved our country from dividing into 2 separate unions and basically saved our country. He kept our country together when we were about to split due to the civil war and slavery. The South wanted to split from the North and become their own country. They wanted to keep slavery while the North and Lincoln were against it. Lincoln helped unite the country during its biggest internal conflict in its history.
His continued education as a free man and his prowess as a writer granted him incredible opportunity unbeknownst to the common slave or Negro. Douglass’ extraordinary background allowed him to have a different and more demanding outlook on what real equality is than the majority of Negros at this time. Douglass’ main argument in his speech “What the Black Man Wants” is the push for Negro suffrage. Douglass’ takes a very strong stance on equality early on in his speech, stating, “I am for the immediate, unconditional, and universal enfranchisement of the black man.” His idea of equality is complete and total equality, not just freedom from slavery, but also societal and legislative equality between blacks and whites. Douglass’ strong stance differs from the views of recently
Abraham Lincoln was not a man of high rank before his presidency; his only military experience was from being “captain of a militia unit that saw no action in the Black Hawk War (McPherson).” Even without the same education that his peers received, Lincoln was known to be a quick study, “He observed the successes and failures of his own and the enemy’s military commanders and drew apt conclusions; he made mistakes and learned from them; he applied his large quotient of common sense to slice through the obfuscations and excuses of military subordinates (McPherson).” He was also known for his admirable speeches which he wrote for himself by hand. His inaugural speeches evoked emotion in everyone: fathers and mothers, the elder and the children, as well as the blacks and whites. But his most important contributions and most recognized achievements occurred during the Civil War. The Emancipation was a crucial part of the North’s national strategy (McPherson). Lincoln stated that, “a military necessity, absolutely necessary to
President Obama’s A More Perfect Union speech that he delivered conveyed many messages about his beliefs concerning racism. He starts off explaining how the founders of our nation made the Constitution creating all men equal, but not actually practicing that idea. Obama is the son of a white woman and a Kenyan man, and there is much criticism about his supporters supporting him purely because of his race. His former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright recently spoke some very controversial words concerning the issue of racism, which created much unease. Obama goes on to say that his former pastor is a good man, that he just has lived and grew up in a time where segregation and the Jim Crow Laws were very much legal in the U.S.
