What is a hero? By: Marissa Sacco Columbia Southern University What is a hero you ask? For each and every person this answer is going to be different so today it’s my turn. A hero to me is someone you look up to. As a child when I heard hero I thought of a “super hero” with the cape and all. When you look up hero on Google the first webpage that pops up is (dictionary.com.) “The definition of hero is a : a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability b : an illustrious warrior c : a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities d : one who shows great courage 2.a : the principal male character in a literary or dramatic work b : the central figure in an event, period, or movement.” Now that I am adult, I know that a hero is not someone with a cape but instead it’s someone you look up to. Every person has a hero. It may be their mother, friend, teacher, sport player, father, sibling, or as simple as a pet. My hero is my son. I consider him my hero because threw everything I have gone through, I know from here on out he will always be there for me. As a young child, he only sees the good in people and not the evil. No matter what, he will always save me. When I am down, all I have to do is look at him with his big smile and sweet giggle. He is almost like my depression medication, but without actually having to take something. I just need to look at him. As I said in the beginning each person’s definition of a hero is different so I decided to ask a friend. This is his theory on what a hero is. “A hero is somebody I look up to, somebody that has helped me through my worst days. When I’m depressed, they pull me back to seeing a better take on what is depressing me. When I’m nervous or anxious, they help me take a breather and help me calm down.
