Throughout our ancient times, many well-known writers have written numerous heroic stories, which reveal the outstanding exploits of some heroes. Although our world embraces various cultures, countries, and generations, the definition of a hero has remained unchanged. In it’s simplest description found in the dictionaries, a hero, who’s often represented by men, is the one who exhibits the characteristics of being larger-than-life, possess unique fortitude, recognized for his great beneficence, admired for the bravery deeds, has noble or superior qualities, at times is blessed with godlike prowess, and eventually gets honored for being a divine person. Two such heroes who profoundly uphold the hero’s image were King Arthur from Le Morte d’Arthur, and Beowulf from the epic poem, Beowulf. Though they come from different cultures, time periods, and lands, King Arthur and Beowulf do share some similarities and differences.

All those examples of the characters might or might not be a hero. However, every of them has the same of qualities of a heroic person. This shows disloyalty towards his people who are very loyal to him. Through these points, it is evident that Odysseus lacks the necessary traits of a true hero. Superficially, his victories and valor make him seem as though he is heroic. Yet, the underlying issue is that Odysseus tends to be selfish, disloyal and cowardly. By the end of his journey the many occurrences of his flaws outshine his perceived heroic qualities.
I feel that being a hero is having the willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others. A hero is a person who doesn’t expect something out of the heroic deed, and they don’t need fame or media to honor them. Christopher Reeve, known as Superman to many, exemplified these traits, and lived the definition of a true hero. On the screen he was pictured as invincible when in his own life he fought for his own survival. He exhibited grace and strength while showing selflessness in order to help those that were facing similar circumstances.
