What might have happened if Godot had really come? An investigation into the dilemma in Waiting for Godot The original French version of Waiting for Godot entitles En attendente Godot (literally meaning „While Awaiting Godot‟). It implies that it is waiting not Godot that matters. It is this waiting that dirives Didi and Gogo from time to time. The most repeated words of Didi and Gogo are: Nothing to do. We can‟t leave. We are waiting for Godot. Godot is coming. We‟ll be saved. In the second act, Gogo asks Didi about their first meeting with Godot: Gogo : What did he talk about? Didi : Nothing Specific. There is really nothing specific to talk about. Godot has nothing to offer them but waiting so far as the action goes on. Yet, this waiting is supposed to come to an end by the arrival of Godot himself. But at the end of both the acts, he infringes his promise to meet them. The possibility of what might happen if Godot had really come posses a potential threat not only to the sturcture of the drama, but also to the soul existence of its characters. when it is asked what would be the possible consequenses if Godot had really come, this gives rise to another subsequent and basic question, „should he come?‟ we might find some answers to these questions if we look at the way the tramps are treating the time while waiting. In this regard, we must not always rely on the tramps‟ remark of the waiting period. They are not even always concious about their own state. What we can and should count is their activities, their responses and reactions ( which of course, are changing time to time). As the play falls into a cycle of repetitive actions, it can propose a number of possible endings each and every member of the audience is free to propound his or her own conclusion.
